Irish Insider

January 29,2020
Thank you to all those parents, Student Council members, and teachers who assisted us with our Open House on Sunday. We had a nice turnout of people interested in St. Catharine School. As always, our parents (and their children) are always our best ambassadors!

Congratulations to Pete Santorsola for winning the Spelling Bee last week! The elimination process took a while and we have some great spellers who participated in this event!

On Tuesday, we heard a speaker from the Harmony Project who talked with our students about their outreach program to the local community. We are excited about supporting this social service organization by participating in “Penny Wars”. This friendly competition will last until Friday, January 31. The winner of this competition will receive an “Out of Uniform” day and also work with our cafeteria staff on planning a week’s menu for the cafeteria for the week of March 16 – 19. It will be interesting to see what items appear on the menu!!

Today we will complete our involvement in the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in school. We have had different classes lead the student body in a morning prayer that places our lives and our actions towards others in the hands of Jesus for guidance and protection. We have our school Mass today followed by the Enthronement in the school. Father Dury will lead the student body in this ceremony.

The month of February starts our Student-Led Conferences. Teachers are working with classes on compiling a portfolio of student work that can be shared during these conference times with their parents. In addition, it provides time for our students to discuss their goals moving into the Third Quarter. The first of these Student-Led Conferences are on Tuesday, February 5 from 5 – 6 or 6 – 7. Additional information on location and sign-up will be sent home on Thursday, January 30.
Until Next Week,

Janet Weisner

St. Catharine Home & School Nominations
Catholic Schools Week Fundraiser

We at St. Catharine are blessed with so many gifts. The annual “Penny Wars” are a great way to teach our children the joy of giving back, in a fun, competitive manner while showing we are thankful for our community that works together for service to others.

This year money raised by our students will be donated to the Harmony Project located in Columbus. For information on the Harmony Project visit The students will be playing penny wars for ONE WEEK ONLY, Monday, January 27th through Friday, January 31st. Money can be placed in class jars up until 9:30 a.m. Friday. The winning class will receive wristbands for Thursday night of Fun Fest!!!

How Penny Wars are played
Each class will compete to obtain the highest point total. Pennies are awarded positive points and other denominations are awarded negative points. Every penny a class has in their jar equals 1 point and, for example, every $1 bill a class has in their jar equals -100 points. Each class seeks to maximize its points by getting as many pennies as possible in their containers, preventing other denominations from being slipped in, and trying to put non-penny coins or bills into others' containers. It's a win-win situation: The team with the most points wins the competition.
No Parking Zone
The area in front of the school on Fair Avenue is marked as No Parking from 7a - 9a and 2p -4p. This is for the safety of our students and to give a clear view for Safety Patrol. Please do not pull up in front of the school during inclement weather to pick up your child at the beginning or end of the school day. Please use the car line.
