Kansas’ civil rights story did not begin in a courtroom in 1954.
In fact, it began long before Kansas became a state.
From lunch-counter sit-ins in Wichita and the freedom seekers of Nicodemus to President Eisenhower’s leadership in Abilene, Brown v. Board of Education in Topeka, and the powerful storytelling of Gordon Parks in Fort Scott, Kansas has long stood at the crossroads of America’s fight for freedom and equality.
Our newest blog, “Beyond Brown v. Board: A Kansas Civil Rights Road Trip,” highlights eight places across Kansas where history helped shape America.
8 Kansas stops
1 hidden speakeasy
1 school that changed America
1 legendary storyteller
Countless stories worth discovering
Ready to hit the road and explore the places where freedom was debated, defended, and advanced?

Inside This Kansas Mansion That Has Looked Almost The Same Since 1905
by TravelMag
| | |
Some houses age. Others seem to pause time at the front door.
A Kansas mansion that has looked almost the same since the early nineteen-hundreds offers the rare thrill of stepping into a room and feeling the past still arranged around you.
Grand staircases, antique furnishings, polished wood, old details, and the quiet drama of another era can make the whole visit feel like walking through a living photograph.
