WE ARE OPEN LATE
THURSDAY & FRIDAY 8AM - 8PM

First and foremost, you must choose Hydrangeas that are capable of being blue, such as the Cityline Series, Let's Dance Series or Tuff Stuff Mountain Hydrangeas. It doesn't matter if they are pink when you purchase them, you can make the transition easily if it is one of these varieties.
Aluminum Sulphate
Soils in SW Ontario tend to be on the alkaline side, which is favourable for these varieties if you wish to keep them pink. However, the use of aluminum sulphate is generally a must for keeping your blues constant.
This is readily available at our garden centre and available in a granular formulation which is super easy to use. Incorporate a little into the soil when planting. In addition, to maintain the proper pH level, mix it with water and apply to your hydrangeas every 3-4 weeks through the growing season. Regular applications will keep your big blue buds happy, healthy and blue.

The Science Behind It
The intensity of colour depends on the pH of your soil, ie: the more acidic the soil, the more intense the shade of blue. Ideally a pH of 5 - 5.5 is just about perfect for blue hydrangeas. If you prefer to keep your Hydrangeas pink, you need to lower the acidic level of your soil with Dolomitic Lime. Purple Hydrangeas are achieved by finding a happy medium between the two levels of PH.

In addition to these additives, start the "bluing" process by incorporating peat into the soil at time of planting and mulching your hydrangeas with pine needles or bark can also help tremendously.

There is no reason to worry about the exact level of PH. The colours of your blooms will show you what is required, however if monitoring the PH level interests you, we have testers in store for a fun science project and best results.
