Is Christ's Last Command Your First Concern?
The last command of our Lord Jesus Christ is known by many Christians, but obeyed by few. His last command was given when He commissioned His disciples with these words: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Mat. 28:19-20). The Great Commission is a command for all true disciples of Jesus Christ to become disciple-makers by proclaiming His Gospel to those who are perishing. Our Lord's last command should motivate every blood-bought Christian to labor in the fields white for harvest (John 4:35). Below are additional motivations to consider:
1. Evangelism Glorifies Our Great God our Savior
Paul exhorts us with this reminder. You have been bought with a price, therefore glorify God (1 Cor. 6:20). One of the best ways to glorify God is to proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). He is worthy of all honor, praise and glory!
2. Evangelism is a Royal Privilege to Serve the King
All Christians have been given the royal privilege to serve the King of kings as His ambassadors in His ministry of reconciliation. This is an awesome responsibility because God is making His appeal through us. We implore the lost, on behalf of Christ, to be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:18-20).
3. Evangelism is a Demonstration
of Love
When we truly love people, we will show them the only way they can escape the eternal punishment that awaits them in the lake of fire (Rev. 20:10-14). With love and compassion we must show them they have broken God's law, they are condemned by God's justice, they deserve God's wrath, they desperately need God's mercy and their only hope is God's Son. It is not love to allow people to march proudly toward hell's gate without persuading them to trust God's only provision for their sin.
4. Evangelism is a Mark of T
rue Conversion
Those who were converted in the first century could not stop speaking about what they had seen and heard (Acts 4:20). After our Lord finished His earthly mission to seek and to save the lost, He passed the baton to His disciples (Luke 19:10). Knowing this, we must seek after those who will not seek the true God (Rom. 3:11). Bearing fruit for the glory of God is living proof that you are His disciples (John 15:8-16; 1 Pet. 1:7).
5. Jesus is the Only Hope for the Lost
The Gospel is an exclusive message of grace that boldly proclaims there is only one Savior and one Mediator between God and man (John 14:6; 1 Tim. 2:5). No other religion offers a savior and no other religion has a message with divine power to save (Rom. 1:16).
May our love and devotion to Christ be manifested by bringing glory to His holy name through the proclamation of His awe-inspiring Gospel. The fruit of our labor will result in memorials to His grace throughout all eternity (Eph. 2:5-7). Let us all magnify the Lord Jesus Christ by making His last command our very first concern!
