Parent to Parent Newsletter

Welcome to the July issue of the Your Choice Parent to Parent newsletter.

We hope you are enjoying your summer and getting a chance to rest and recharge. We are still running our monthly Detour Classes and Wake Up Call Tours during the summer and have been busy booking our 2018/19 schedule.

We have some sad news to share. Buckley's Appalachian Trail Thru Hike has been postponed due to an injury sustained on the trail. You can find a video update below. We still want to help Buckley reach his goal by helping him walk or hike the remaining 1895 miles!

Here's how it works:

  1. Go for a walk or hike and track your miles
  2. Talk a picture & post to Facebook (don't forget to tag Your Choice)
  3. Share, share and share some more!

Let's help Buckley reach his goal!

If you haven't had a chance, please take a moment to check out this video to see the impact we made in 2017!
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, or if you would like to read about a certain topic in the next newsletter,  please email us .   Your ideas and feedback are always appreciated.

What Parents Should Know:
Is Marijuana Addiction a Real Thing?
Is marijuana addiction a real thing? The legalization landscape is rapidly changing and we are seeing more and more young people using marijuana. Some don't see the big deal, claiming that marijuana is harmless; others are concerned about the societal impact it is causing. One of the topics that has been hotly debated is whether or not marijuana addiction is a real thing.

According to the National Institue on Drug Abuse (NIDA), marijuana addiction is a very real thing. In fact, it is so real that in 2015 4 million people met the diagnostic criteria for addiction. Most people who use marijuana fall into the category of dependence, meaning they experience withdrawal symptoms when not using. It is estimated that around 30% of people who use marijuana have some degree of dependence.

Marijuana addiction or dependence is more risky for teenagers. Those who use marijuana before the age of 18 are more like to develop dependence problems as an adult. Dependence can turn into addiction over time. Because people don't tend to believe that marijuana is addicting, they may not exhibit as much caution in their use. In this current climate, it is important to keep talking about the risks associated with any substance, especially marijuana.

Tips For Teens: Detour Letter

Each month we feature an inspirational letter from a student in our Detour Class. Detour is a class designed to gently but powerfully challenge common beliefs about drug and alcohol use. One of the assignments at the end of the class is to write a letter to a special person in your life that touches on some important aspects from the class.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT:
Lake Life Photography
About Lake Life Photography: We are thrilled to be a part of two vivacious communities including Lake Country where we have our second studio, plus Milwaukee’s Historic Walker’s Point where we live and work, as well.

In this day and age where photography has become a “quick snap everyman vocation”, I take pride in the discipline, skill and artistry cultivated over the years harnessing light to chisel the perfect portrait for my clients. I take time to let you relax into the experience and work quickly to capture all the nuances. I ,also, invite you to be a co-creator in the process, as well, so your personal touch is evident in your keepsake portrait or images. Just as any true artist would sign only the finished work I too handcraft and render each image uniquely as a finished work. I do not subscribe to simply composing and shooting images and handing over a file to be rifled through or rendered with no care. That’s my commitment to my craft and my commitment to you, to provide quality images that celebrate your family’s story and archival quality prints that preserve your heritage.

Lake Life Photography took the photos of our second annual fundraiser. You can find them here.
