Is Obesity Passed from Mother to Child?
The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity in the US has tripled over the past 3 decades. The comorbid conditions associated with obesity are numerous and deleterious for our nation’s children and their future. Genetic, environmental, and cultural inputs are contributing factors to childhood obesity. A recent study in
JAMA Pediatrics
including 900+ full-term infant-mother pairs to examine the plausibility and possible mechanisms mediating the intergenerational transfer of obesity from mother to offspring. The mediating roles of birth mode and infant gut microbiota composition were investigated.

Yoga Positively Impacts Children’s Quality of Life
We are a stressed society, and our children are not immune. Stressors originating from home life and school (e.g. academic performance concerns, peer exclusion, social pressure, bullying, etc.) can result in negative short- and long-term consequences to children’s mental wellbeing, physical health and quality of life (QOL). Stress is a potentially malleable factor for children, so evidence-based approaches to reduce stress and improve mental health and wellbeing are essential. A recent, randomized controlled school-based study examined the effects of yoga and mindfulness activities on 3rd grade students’ emotional and psychosocial QOL.

There is a 50% risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the 10-20 years following a gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) diagnosis. In this ACPM course, Dr. David Grimes discusses GDM as “diabetes for two.” He explores the roles and importance of breastfeeding, intensive lifestyle interventions and annual re-evaluation of glucose tolerance in women with GDM to reduce their risk of T2D development, in addition to decreasing the offspring’s risk of developing childhood obesity and impaired glucose tolerance.
