Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene may help with breast cancer prognosis? According to a study in Nutrients, not only can it help women during treatment, but also may be highly beneficial for prevention if women screen for VDR gene polymorphisms.

There were three other new vitamin D studies you should know about.

A huge study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which followed subjects for over 13 years, demonstrated a 19% to 25% increased risk of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and vascular dementia for those with vitamin D deficiency and a 10% to 15% increased risk of those with vitamin D insufficiency. Regular users of vitamin D and multivitamins had 17% and 14% lower risk, respectively.

According to a Nutrition Journal, there is a significant association between lower serum 25 (OH)D concentration and increased all-cause mortality among adults with hypertension. Furthermore, the study found that vitamin D supplementation had a strong correlation with reduced all-cause and CVD mortality.

Treatment with eldecalcitol (an active vitamin D treatment) has the potential to prevent the onset of sarcopenia among people via increasing skeletal muscle volume and strength, which might lead to a substantial risk reduction of falls, according to a study in The Lancet.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. In September 2023, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. The FDA sent a warning letter to Amazon in late December 2023.

Is Stretching Good or Bad?

Steve: The benefits of stretching have gone through phases of influence. The question for me isn't as much about being good or bad, because stretching is good. However, it is more important to individualize the form and when you should stretch.

Pre-workout Stretch There is significant data that says a pre-workout stretch without a warmup may be disadvantageous, weakening muscles, hindering performance, and increase risk for injury. Is this to say that you should not stretch before your workout? Absolutely you should stretch, but you have to do it intelligently.

First, warmup for at least five minutes. Brisk walking, light jogging, and jumping jacks are a few ways you can warm up before stretching.

Instead of static stretching (getting into and holding a position that challenges a muscle, with the goal of improving range of motion around a joint), it is more advantageous to do dynamic stretching.

Dynamic stretching mimics the activity or the movement that you’re going to do in whatever activity you’re about to start. It helps rehearse the movement patterns so the muscles get excited a little bit earlier and faster which can help improve power and increase coordination.

Following this protocol will not hinder performance and will prevent injury.

Post-workout Stretch

Stretching post-workout is where you get the most benefit. However, you still need to be smart about it.

When you're done with your workout or athletic event, don't start stretching right away. Allow your body to cool down for five minutes or so. This can be walking, light jogging or bike pedaling.

Then, you can do static stretching because you do want to improve your range of motion. Your body will still be warm, but your muscles and joints will have calmed down enough where they can accept the stretching.
