Is Turning Away from Sin Repentance?

Some people teach that repentance is simply telling sinners to turn away from sin. But how can slaves or prisoners set themselves free? Jesus told Paul in Acts 26:18, “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”

True repentance isn’t just telling a sinner to “turn away from sin,” but to turn to God, who sets them free from sin.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19).
