Are you ready for the holidays? I am definitely not... but that's me - last minute 'Schatz' as my husband likes to say... (Schatz is what he calls me)... But really I have an excuse... I'm a December baby, so to me Christmas doesn't start until after my birthday.
Anyway, December for business folk, is also a time to reflect on the year and plan for the coming year. It is also National Write A Business Plan Month, and if you haven’t reviewed your business plan in a while, let me tell you about a client of mine who learned just how important this can be.
She runs a small interior design company and has been in business for 15 years. Recently, she found it harder and harder to attract new clients, even though her skills and experience had grown immensely. When I asked if she had a business plan, she proudly said yes and sent it over. But when I asked how often she reviewed or adjusted it, her answer floored me: “Never. I wrote it to start the business and haven’t looked at it since.”
When I reviewed her plan, I noticed that her marketing and messaging were stuck in the past—reflecting the business she started, not the thriving, skilled company she’d become. Her expertise had evolved, her competitors had changed (some had even closed up shop), and her clients’ needs were completely different from when she first launched. Yet she was still holding true to what she wrote all those years ago.
Once we realigned her marketing to reflect her current skills, offerings, and ideal clients, the results were incredible. Her phone started ringing again, and her pipeline filled with projects that matched where her business was now.
A business plan isn’t something you write once and forget about. It’s a living document, meant to grow and evolve with your business. Reviewing your plan regularly ensures that your goals, strategies, and marketing align with where you are today—not where you were when you started.
As we wrap up the year and prepare for the next, take time to review your business plan. Are you targeting the right audience? Does your marketing reflect your current strengths and offerings? Are your goals still relevant? A strong, updated plan can guide your strategy, uncover new opportunities, and keep your business on the right track.
If it’s been a while since you dusted off your business plan, now is the perfect time to do so. Whether you’re starting fresh or need to revisit your goals, having a clear plan will make all the difference for your 2025 success. And if you’re unsure where to start, we can help.
