MedChi has joined the lawsuit against MultiPlan, Inc. (“MultiPlan”) and major health insurers to protect our physician members and the patients who depend on them.
The lawsuit aims to show that MultiPlan collaborated with major insurance companies to create an unfair system that systematically drives down reimbursement rates for physicians providing out‑of‑network care. Rather than competing on out‑of‑network payment levels, major insurers share their pricing data with MultiPlan, which MultiPlan then uses to recommend the lowest possible reimbursement rates.
The Result: physicians receive payments that are artificially depressed, far below fair market value, and are left with no meaningful opportunity to negotiate.
This conduct threatens the financial stability of doctors and other medical providers in Maryland, endangering patients’ access to care. While MedChi members struggle to cover their costs, MultiPlan and insurance companies have generated billions in profit.
In joining the lawsuit, MedChi is seeking a court order to stop MultiPlan’s anti-competitive conduct and restore a fair, competitive system for out-of-network payments on behalf of our members. We hope our participation in this case will help ensure all physicians in Maryland receive fair payment for the vital care they provide.
