Most work fits within three basic categories.

  1. Toil work: Waste of time energy spent on bureaucracy, passive aggressive culture, negativity, endless meetings, outdated processes.
  2. Okay work: Most people spend time on 'okay' work - familiar, productive, predictable, formulaic work that can be interesting but can also become mundane over time.
  3. Great work: This work is meaningful to a person and makes an impact on the organization. This work is fulfilling to the individual and strategically positions the organization to move forward. It is innovative and promotes lasting success.

Finding the balance between "Great" work and "Okay" work is a continuous process, with "Toil" work running negative interference. Over time "Great" work fades to "Okay" work because as a person masters a skill it no longer offers them the same challenge or reward. Great work is something that makes a difference for someone personally and serves a greater purpose for the organization. It can be something easy or difficult, done quickly or over a longer period of time.

1. The goal here is to help you find opportunity to make your work life more rewarding. Divide the circle into how much Toil, Okay and Great work you are doing and attach a percentage to each.

2. In each section write down at least three specific examples of work you are doing in each section.
