I hate shopping! I know that goes against all female stereotypes but yuck! Specifically, I hate clothes shopping. Nothing fits right, there are way too many mirrors, I don't want to take the time for shopping and I have zero fashion sense.

It's just an ordeal and not a happy one. I hate shopping so much, I finally took to going into a store, buying a lot of items at once, take it all home, try everything on, then take back everything that didn't work.

Seemed faster than dressing and undressing over and over while trying something on (shopping alone especially is the pits!) but it actually took twice the time because there were always returns.

However that has all changed! These days there are all sorts of subscription programs to help shopping haters like me. You can get just about anything you want through a subscription service. Lingerie, work wear, leisure wear, fitness wear, shoes -- you need it, it exists.

I joined Stitch Fix and love it! They truly do their best to send clothes that work for your particular shape and taste. And they are all high quality clothes to boot - no pun intended! They make it so easy too. You get a box once per month (or at a frequency of your choosing).

You have three days to love it and keep it or return what you don't like. Checkouts are online, fees are automatically debited, and returns are ridiculously easy. You just put what you don't want in a prepaid return bag and drop it in the mail. That's it.

For more info, or to set up your own Stitch Fix account, click here (note, I do get a $15 credit for referring customers).

And don't think, if you're male, that I've forgotten about you. There are several subscription plans for men including Trendy Butler,
Five Four Club, Trunk Club and oh yeah, Stitch Fix for Men

Please keep in mind I haven't tried any of the men-specific subscription plans so please do your own due diligence!

Still, even though I hate shopping, occasionally I buy clothes 'in person' but often they don't fit very well so I have finally adopted the attitude of 'buy what I love, then have it altered'. In fact, alterations are my new best friend.

Clothes should fit and should be flattering no matter what size or shape you are. We all have problem areas that don't fit the fashion industry's idea of 'perfect' and besides, how impossible is it to design clothes to fit all body types?

It took a while, but I finally found a tailor/seamstress I love -- her name is Lupe of Lupe's Alterations and if you want to have tailoring done, please consider her. Her phone number is 760.776.4261 and her hours are 9:30 to 4:30 (this is not a paid endorsement!). She is located at 73983 CA-111, Palm Desert, CA 92260, close to Portola and Hwy 111.

To be honest, I love being part of this technological era. The convenience of online and subscription shopping saves time, makes sure I get quality clothes chosen for me personally and frees my mind for other things. What a relief it is not to have to go to a store!

As a last thought, I'll share with you something I think is interesting. One of my heroes is Albert Einstein. (I'm a sucker for a smart man!). He didn't want to be bothered to think about what he was going to wear either.

So he only had black pants and white shirts. Made the daily dressing ritual easy. And other smart men do this too -- think about Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. They almost always dress (or dressed) the same day after day.

So once upon a time, I adopted Einstein's theory of dressing and only wore black pants and white (or white/black) tops. Made packing easier when I worked on the road. But something interesting happened.

I found only wearing black and white incredibly depressing. I missed color and I could literally feel it in my soul. Color is necessary for variety yes, but also for our emotions.

Depending on which one, color can make us feel happy, excited, warm, joyous, aggressive or angry. Just for interest sake, here is a web designer's take on how the colors you choose for your website (and possibly your clothes) may affect your intended audience: Designer's Website Colors

Until next time, consider signing up for a subscription clothing service and put a little color into your life! Oh, and if you need help getting your clothes to the tailor, we are just a phone call away! 760-898-9604
