Is this generation really the most boring?

Despite growing up in a world where texting, social media, and video calls are second nature, many members of Generation Z are finding it difficult to build meaningful in-person connections. New research shows that weekends, which have traditionally been a time for socializing, are often when young adults feel the most isolated. More than half of Gen Z respondents reported feeling lonely on a typical weekend, a much higher percentage than any other generation. Instead of filling their free time with outings or events, many have settled into routines that revolve around staying home.

This shift is driven by a variety of reasons rather than a single cause. The rising cost of entertainment, meals, and nightlife has made going out less practical for many young adults. Others simply prefer to avoid loud, crowded environments or gatherings where drinking is the main attraction. Some respondents also admitted they struggle to find enough friends to regularly meet in person, making digital communication their primary way of staying connected. At the same time, many see weekends as a chance to rest and recover after a busy week, choosing quiet evenings over packed social calendars.

The findings suggest that social habits are evolving, not disappearing. Gen Z still values friendships and connection, but many are looking for experiences that better fit their lifestyles and budgets. More alcohol-free events, smaller group activities, and affordable community gatherings could help meet that demand while making socializing feel less overwhelming. As this generation continues to shape consumer trends, businesses and organizations that create welcoming spaces for genuine, face-to-face interaction may be better positioned to engage a growing audience that is eager to connect in new ways.

Did the World Cup even Score Big for Advertisers?

The excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup is making an impact far beyond the soccer field. The global tournament helped fuel a major increase in U.S. advertising activity, with spending in June rising 19.3% compared to the same period last year. After months of slower growth across the advertising industry, the World Cup provided a much-needed boost and helped accelerate overall market momentum.

Major sporting events have a unique ability to attract large audiences, and advertisers took advantage of the opportunity to connect with millions of viewers. The tournament contributed an estimated $400 million in additional ad spending during June, with another increase expected in July as coverage continued. While events like the World Cup only happen every four years, their ability to bring together global audiences creates a valuable opportunity for brands looking to increase visibility.

The biggest impact was seen in traditional television advertising. National TV ad spending grew 36% compared to June of the previous year, largely driven by World Cup broadcasts across Fox and Telemundo. The tournament demonstrated that live sports remain one of the most powerful ways for advertisers to reach engaged audiences, even as consumers continue shifting toward digital platforms and streaming services.

Is Video the Future of Podcasting?

Video podcasts are becoming one of the fastest-growing forms of digital content, and advertisers are paying attention. Thousands of video podcasts are now available in the U.S., with even more reaching audiences around the world. Major streaming and media platforms continue to expand their investments in the format, signaling confidence that viewers increasingly prefer watching conversations instead of simply listening to them. At the same time, short-form video apps are helping podcasts reach new audiences by turning memorable moments into easily shareable clips.

Although podcasting continues to grow, only a small percentage of shows attract the majority of listeners. The biggest programs, many of which are hosted on YouTube, draw millions of viewers and have helped push video podcasts into the mainstream. This popularity has fueled strong growth in podcast advertising, creating a multibillion-dollar market as brands look for new ways to connect with highly engaged audiences. Rather than spreading budgets evenly across thousands of shows, advertisers are focusing on podcasts that have already established a loyal fan base.

Interestingly, most podcasts still do not feature advertising at all. However, the shows that do secure sponsors typically reach much larger audiences than those without brand partnerships. This suggests that advertisers are rewarding proven success instead of trying to build an audience from scratch. Direct-response companies continue to dominate podcast sponsorships, while many larger consumer brands are taking a more cautious approach. As video consumption continues to rise, podcast creators who can consistently grow their audiences may be well positioned to benefit from future advertising opportunities.

Local Sports Have a New Playbook?

While live sports continue to be one of the strongest draws for television networks and streaming platforms, the future of local sports coverage remains unclear. Regional sports networks, which have traditionally been the home for many MLB, NBA, and NHL teams, are going through major changes. The latest development comes with Main Street Sports winding down operations after years of financial challenges and attempts to restructure the business. With the decline of the Fox Sports, Bally Sports, and FanDuel Sports models, teams and media companies are now facing a major shift in how local games reach fans.

Moving forward, local sports rights deals may look very different from the exclusive agreements that have been common in the past. A growing possibility is a shared approach where games are distributed across several platforms, including streaming services, cable networks, and traditional broadcast stations. While this could mean smaller rights payments for teams, it may create a healthier business model for media companies while allowing advertisers to connect with highly engaged sports audiences. Even without exclusive rights, live local sports remain a valuable opportunity for brands looking to reach passionate fans.

Many leaders in the sports industry believe collaboration will be key to the next phase of local sports media. The future may not rely on one company owning all the rights, but rather a combination of platforms working together to expand access for viewers. As streaming continues to grow and traditional television evolves, the sports media industry appears to be moving toward a more flexible model that balances fan reach, business sustainability, and advertising opportunities.

Could the Chicago Cubs one day go back to long time partner WGN-TV where that network would air half their games along with current streaming network Marquee Sports Network? Could the White Sox one day air some of their games on Fox 32 in addition to Chicago Sports Network? Time wil tell.

Are Midterms Already Boosting Ratings?

The upcoming midterm elections are already creating a noticeable boost for cable news audiences. As political coverage ramps up, several major networks saw viewership gains in July, helping push the combined prime-time audience for the leading cable news channels higher than it was a year ago. Nielsen data shows that the top five cable news networks attracted 4.4 million prime-time viewers in July, a 10% increase compared with July 2025, signaling that viewers are turning back to traditional news outlets for election updates and analysis.

Not every network benefited equally, though. Fox News Channel continued to hold its position as the top-rated cable news network, but its prime-time audience dipped slightly from the previous year. Meanwhile, MS Now gained ground with a 16% increase in prime-time viewers, reaching 1 million, and CNN saw one of the biggest jumps among major networks, growing its audience by nearly one-third compared with last July. The increases suggest that competition is intensifying as networks look to capture viewers following the latest political developments.

Smaller networks are also finding opportunities as interest in election coverage grows. NewsNation posted a strong year-over-year increase, with its prime-time audience rising 32%, while Newsmax experienced a decline during the same period. With the 2026 midterms approaching, cable news networks are entering a critical period where audience growth, political coverage, and the ability to attract viewers could shape the next phase of the industry.

Are you Socially Challenged?

During my 18 years as a business owner, I have discovered there are (4) main challenges that businesses have when it comes to managing their social media platforms:

1) A lack of time to post consistently enabling your company to grow its following

2) A lack of strategy/knowledge on the type of content and messaging to post in order to grow your following

3) A lack of knowledge of which social media platform(s) a company should utilize in order to effectively target on social media

4) A lack of graphic design/video ability/images to post eye-catching content to grab your target's attention.

If one or more of these challenges hits home, we can help! We have a reasonable and effective solution to manage your social media platforms. Our solution combines the wisdom of a 30-year media vet with the talents and creativity of our Gen Z social media expert, Cate Bender.
