Liz on Leadership
Is your competition going faster than you are?

About a month ago, I bought an amazing new car.

I didn’t need to buy it. My “old” sedan was still driving well and looking good. But after years of learning about cars from my teenage son (who knows far more about the subject than I ever did), I got the bug.

So, I picked up a little SUV with a whole lot of punch. A Porsche Macan S. And let me tell you, this car can move! This is not your mother’s SUV. (I can’t say that to my son, of course. It literally is his mother’s SUV.)

Although I wasn’t looking for a fast car (zero to 60 in 5.1 seconds!), I have to admit, my Macan is a whole lot of fun to drive. It gets me where I’m going, just as my old car did. But it gets me there with more excitement, more inspiration, more fun… and simply faster than I’d ever imagined. It’s a genuine thrill.

And it got me thinking about just how vital it is to live life, run a business, lead a team, and dominate the marketplace in ways that are exciting, new, and adventurous. Not to mention faster than you ever dreamed possible.

The fact is, a thriving business is never built on doing things today just as you did them yesterday. Even when what you accomplished yesterday was pretty amazing.

Marshall Goldsmith coined the phrase “what got you here won’t get you there.” That concept, which applies so well to leaders as we advance through our careers and lives, also applies to running your business. Always look ahead, and be sure to adapt your strategy, tactics, technology, and people to drive you brilliantly into the future.

Take a pause to ask yourself—and pose to your team—the following questions:

  1. What are we doing to move the business forward with more excitement, inspiration, fun and speed, to drive better, more sustainable results than ever before?
  2. What are the 3 most important things we must do today to ensure an extraordinarily successful tomorrow?

If the answers aren’t immediately apparent, it’s time to get thinking, planning, and acting differently. Chances are, your competition is already on the move.

If you’d like to explore ways to lead your organization to the next level, pivot to get ahead of a changing landscape, and grow twice as fast as you’re growing today, get in touch with me.
