A Simple 5-Day Gut Recovery Plan After a Stomach Flu
Every recovery is different, but this general guide can help your digestive system gradually return to normal.
Day 1: Re-hydrate and Rest Focus: Replace lost fluids and electrolytes.
Sip water frequently. Drink an electrolyte solution if needed. Eat small amounts of bananas, applesauce, toast, plain crackers, or oatmeal if you can tolerate them. Avoid greasy, spicy, and sugary foods.
Day 2: Add Gentle Nutrition Focus: Begin rebuilding energy.
Continue drinking plenty of fluids. Add baked or mashed potatoes, plain pasta, chicken soup, cooked carrots, or other soft vegetables. Eat small meals every 3–4 hours rather than large portions.
Day 3: Introduce Probiotics Focus: Begin restoring healthy gut bacteria.
Add yogurt with live cultures or kefir if tolerated. Continue eating easy-to-digest meals. Listen to your body—if a food causes discomfort, wait another day before trying again.
Day 4: Feed Your Gut Focus: Nourish beneficial bacteria.
Continue probiotic foods. Add prebiotic foods such as bananas, oats, apples, onions, asparagus, or beans in small amounts. Include lean proteins like chicken, turkey, eggs, or fish to support healing.
Day 5 and Beyond: Return to a Balanced Diet Focus: Maintain a healthy gut.
Resume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains. Continue eating probiotic and prebiotic foods several times each week.
Stay hydrated and maintain regular meal times to support digestive health. 1 Remember If vomiting returns, diarrhea lasts more than 3–5 days, you develop a fever over 102°F (38.9°C), notice blood in your stool, or have signs of dehydration (such as dizziness, dry mouth, or very dark urine), contact your healthcare provider promptly.
