Derek Johnson, Orthopedic Surgeon and Chief of the Bone & Joint Center of Kauai, has lived on Kauai for 15 years. He’s married to Hilary Johnson, Owner & Director of Kauai Ballet Academy. Derek serves as team doctor for the Kauai High School football team, providing free medical care for athletes, including sport physicals and on-site care. Former Boy Scouts of America Scoutmaster, Derek loves hiking, diving, hunting and camping. Derek has led several medical mission trips to the Marshall Islands, providing gratis orthopedic surgery and care to dozens of patients. Derek performed the Grand Pas de Deux in KBA's 2024 & 2025 productions of The Nutcracker and will be playing a piano piece for KBA's performance in May. He sits on the board of Kauai Ballet Academy Foundation which provides tuition scholarships, support for performances, teacher training, and outreach dance programs. Derek organizes the annual KBAF “Hilloween” fundraiser, a Halloween 5K race event for families. He has helped raise over $20,000 for tuition scholarships. He is passionate about caring for others and finding ways to serve his community.

An Askew Look at Kauai Happenings

An Askew Look at Kauai Happenings was inspired by the volunteer work of Kauai arts supporter Greg Askew, who, for a very long time, sent out his own What's Happenin' eblast. Greg and I (the other Greg) got together to combine his efforts into our Elsewhere on our Garden Isle. If you have a non-profit, non-political event you would like included, email me.
