Teacher of the Year - Lakevia Mills

St. John's is excited to announce our teacher of the year for 2019-2020. Lakevia Mills has been teaching at St. John's for three years in the science department where she teaches Biology 1, Principles of Biomedical Science, and Human Body Systems. Her students say that she has a wonderful sense of humor and makes science fun and meaningful. They love doing projects in her class. Ms. Mills graduated from Virginia State University with both a BS and MS in Biology.

She says, "I care about the future of my students. I teach because I want to challenge students to push themselves to a higher level. I want to create the best opportunities for each student to be successful, whether it is college or career readiness. I want to give students something that I never had, which is the discovery that they can do anything and they can grow from any challenges they face. I want to challenge them to turn their dreams into a reality."

In addition to teaching, Ms. Mills loves to have a good laugh, enjoys cooking and Chick-Fil-A, reading, and shopping.
Honor Roll Students Celebrated
81 Strong
Eighty-one of our Islanders achieved honor roll for the first quarter. We are very proud of their accomplishments. Wednesday, November 20, we held a cook-out to celebrate their achievement. Mr. Larson manned the grill and served up delicious cheeseburgers and hot-dogs while Ms. Lillibridge served up the chips, buns, and condiments. Students enjoyed the brisk day in Honor Island where they ate and socialized. The supervising teachers were impressed with the vibe.

When Mr. Larson spoke with the group earlier in the week he applauded their hard work and encouraged them to step up and encourage others to achieve this status as well. Honor Roll students enjoy extra privileges throughout the building.

Coach Josh Harpe Honored
Coach Harpe received the honor of 1A Region 4 Coach of the Year. We are proud of Coach Harpe and our team.

Coach Harpe states, "We were a very young team that learned a lot this season. We were able to find some success on the field and the players did a tremendous job of improving the culture of not only our football program but that of St. John's as well. We are excited about the future of the Mighty Islanders."

We are looking forward to another successful year in 2020! Way to go Coach Harpe.
Blood Drive

The CTE and JROTC programs are sponsoring a blood drive at St. Johns on Monday, December 2 from 9-1. Students must be at least 16 years of age (16 year olds must have parental permission) and everyone must weigh at least 110lbs in order to give. Teachers and parents are encouraged to give as well. Please contact the school if you are interested in giving.
St. Johns Reads

As a part of our literacy initiative, we are offering students the opportunity to earn prizes for reading. Students can read in a number of ways and earn points by filling out a form. There are several ways to earn points. Students who read for pleasure achieve higher grades in all subject areas and even have better social skills as a result of reading and sharing their reading.
If you are interested in supporting the program by sponsoring prizes, please go to http://bit.ly/StJohnsReads to donate.
