17 Oct 2023 Are we witnessing the unleashing of unimaginable evil as Israel attempts to completely eliminate Hamas by violently making Gaza unlivable? Trapped Palestinian civilians plea for outside intervention, but the U.S. and European governments look the other way proclaiming “full support” for Israel no matter what.

The irrational lust for the death and destruction of all things Gazan perhaps can be understood as the unconscious influence of an almost supernatural (demonic) force wherein good people accept and call for unimaginable evil telling themselves it is necessary and justified.

In Truths about Evil, Sin, & the Demonic (Byron Belitsos, 2023) we are warned by theologian David Ray Griffin that the demonic may be a real power which is driving the world in a direction “diametrically opposed to divine purposes.”

It may seem strange to say that severe global crises may be due to the influence of “demonic power.” Griffin argues that, despite being highly educated and smart we may be possessed by a “demonic power that is leading us, trance-like, into self-destruction.” What surprises me is Griffin’s statement that we can experience the demonic both when hate leads to destructive actions, but also when “indifference” leads to a failure to take action against evil.

The wars in Palestine/Israel and Ukraine/Russia could not be prevented (or stopped) by the United Nations because the UN Charter is wrong. The UN is frustrated and unable to carry out its most important tasks of ending wars and eliminating nuclear weapons.

Since the October 7 Hamas attacks, and the subsequent, ongoing Israeli airstrikes, US TV news has offered extensive coverage of Israel and Gaza. But as casualties mount, most outlets have paid scant attention to the growing calls for a ceasefire.

After Hamas killed more than 1,400 people in Israel on October 7 and took some 200 hostages, Israeli bombing killed over 5,000 people in Gaza, as of October 22—including more than 1,400 children—and at least 23 journalists and 35 UN staff (UN News, 10/23/23). Ninety-five Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank as well, by both Israeli government forces and settlers. With Israel enacting a "complete siege" of Gaza, cutting off power, food, water and medical supplies, and nowhere for civilians to seek safety, a broad spectrum of critical voices have decried the humanitarian crisis and insisted on a ceasefire and an end to the siege.

In a white paper released over a week after the Hamas-led surprise attack on Israeli military bases and kibbutzes, the Institute for National Security and Zionist Strategy outlined “a plan for resettlement and final rehabilitation in Egypt of the entire population of Gaza,” based on the “unique and rare opportunity to evacuate the entire Gaza Strip” that Israel’s latest assault on the besieged coastal enclave provided.

In 2004, Zionist demographer Arnon Sofer of Haifa University laid out detailed plans for the isolation of Gaza directly to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s government. This entailed withdrawing Israeli forces from the area entirely and constructing a stringent system of surveillance and security to ensure nothing and no one went in or out without Zionist proviso. He predicted a perpetual bloodbath:

“When 2.5 million people live in a closed-off Gaza, it’s going to be a human catastrophe. Those people will become even bigger animals than they are today … The pressure at the border will be awful. It’s going to be a terrible war. So, if we want to remain alive, we will have to kill and kill and kill. All day, every day … the only thing that concerns me is how to ensure the boys and men who are going to have to do the killing will be able to return home to their families and be normal human beings.”

US Government & Newsguard Sued by Consortium News

The United States government and internet “watchdog” NewsGuard Technologies, Inc. were sued today in federal court in Manhattan for First Amendment violations and defamation by news organization Consortium for Independent Journalism, a nonprofit that publishes Consortium News.

Consortium News‘s court filing charges the Pentagon’s Cyber Command, an element of the Intelligence Community, with contracting with NewsGuard to identify, report and abridge the speech of American media organizations that dissent from U.S. official positions on foreign policy. 



In the course of its contract with the Pentagon, NewsGuard is “acting jointly or in concert with the United States to coerce news organizations to alter viewpoints” as to Ukraine, Russia, and Syria, imposing a form of “censorship and repression of views” that differ or dissent from policies of the United States and its allies, the complaint says.

My blueprint for peace is simple. 1. Ceasefire based on the UN Charter, 2. A ban on deliveries of weapons to the belligerents, 3. UN organized international assistance to all populations suffering because of the war, lack of energy, lack of food, 4. UN organized and monitored referenda in Crimea and Donbas, 5. Lifting of sanctions that have nullified the benefits of globalization, broken supply chains, upset international trade, endangered food security, 6. Drafting of a new security architecture for Europe, 7. Coordinated efforts by States and UNHCR to facilitate the repatriation of Ukrainian refugees “in safety and dignity”, 8. A Global fund for reconstruction of infrastructures in all regions affected by the war, 9. Establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to hear grievances from all sides, 10. Investigation and punishment of war crimes by the respective governments as stipulated in the 1949 Geneva Conventions and 1977 Protocols: Ukrainian crimes to be prosecuted by Ukrainian judges, Russian crimes to be investigated prosecuted by Russian tribunals.

   There is a pre-history of this catastrophe. If we want to arrive at a viable peace settlement, we must understand the root causes and create an atmosphere of mutual trust. We must also analyse the conflict not only from the US, Western European or Eastern European perspectives, but also take into account the views of 1.5 Billion Chinese, 1.5 Billion Indians, 240 million Pakistanis, 170 million Bangladeshis, 280 million Indonesians, 220 million Nigerians, 220 million Brazilians, 140 million Mexicans etc. 

The stakes are too high, and we Americans and Europeans have no right to risk the survival of the planet because of an internal European dispute. Indeed, for the average African, Asian or Latin American, it is wholly irrelevant whether Crimea is in Russia or in Ukraine.
