We're Always Celebrating the Arts!
On the Treasure Coast, and possibly in all of Florida, Season means traffic is heavier, supermarkets and restaurants are busier, and getting a ticket to an event at the last minute can be impossible. Vero Beach Opera's Carmen last Sunday was all but packed to the rafters. At the same time, Vero Beach Book Center had in the neighborhood of 200 for Brad Meltzer's book signing of The First Conspiracy.

Liz and Brian Mayo at Artfully Managed are still working with me to get the linked website going. I have it filed under the heading "Coming Soon!" Coming even sooner are more not-to-be-missed events .
This is a huge weekend for the Vero Beach Art Club. The 31st Art by the Sea opens with a private VIP reception Friday evening, when awards are presented to the artists. Only members of the VBAC and Vero Beach Museum of Art are eligible to submit an entry that is no more than two years old and has not been entered in an earlier Art by the Sea. After the reception, ribbons are attached to the winning artwork in time for the museum to welcome the weekend crowds that line up to see and buy. Co-chairs this year are Sherry Haaland and Judy Rixom. (photo credit Phil Reid)

You won't find any Not For Sale signs in the VBMA Holmes Great Hall for this show. One of the requirements for entry in Art by the Sea is availability for purchase, and buyers took advantage of that in great numbers last year. Camy DeMario, VBAC vice president, said 23 percent of the entries were purchased at the 2018 show. She said a percentage of the proceeds is donated to the Vero Beach Art Club to support their educational outreach programs.

The old "something for everyone" idea applies at Art by the Sea when it comes to collectors' budget considerations. Prices will range from $100 to $22,000. Learn everything about Vero Beach Art Club, its history and events at verobeachartclub.org .
Liam Ritchie and Jacob Craig
Jacob Craig, director of music and arts at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach will have a full plate this weekend and next. He and award-winning Russian pianist Sergey Belyavskiy will sit down together again for a piano-four-hands concert Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary. While it's a free event, a $10 donation is requested at the door. Audience alert: Last year's concert was jammed and it's open seating.

The church is host all week for ChamberFest , an intensive program of string workshops, discussions, and performances. The public concerts that end the week are open to the public, Jan. 26 and 27, at 4 p.m. The Saturday concert will feature professional musicians, including founder Jessica Tong. Sunday's concert has the professionals joining Vero Beach High School orchestral students. This one is free, too, with the same donation requested.

While getting the details about ChamberFest, I came across a link to an event this weekend, the Scottish Highland Games in Winter Park. Knowing how passionate Craig is about his heritage, I forwarded it to him. I should have known he'd be all over this one.

Craig is Pipe Major with Vero Beach Pipe and Drums , a group that has been gaining a dedicated Treasure Coast audience. Saturday morning, Craig and one of his students, Liam Ritchie, will be competing at the Scottish Highland Games, Craig in Solo Bagpipe Grade 2, Ritchie in Grade 4 Jr.

Ritchie, 14 and a freshman at John Carroll High School, is the son of Bill and Lenora Ritchie. He has been studying with Craig for two years. Craig gives private lessons in voice, piano and bagpipes and can be reached at jcraigpiano1@gmail.com . He tells me the uniforms pipers wear is called Regalia and the hat alone is a Glengarry.
