Volunteers in Our Community
Make A Difference Day -the fourth Saturday in October - is the largest national day of community service, where hundreds of Ohioans plan service projects each year involving corporations, communities, nonprofit organizations and individual volunteers.
As part of AmeriCorps' Make a Difference Day, Chris Campbell, Ohio College Guide at Alliance High School, gathered six volunteers to clean up Stark Park trails.

Stark's Two Newest Grants Focus on College Credit Plus and Literacy
The Ohio Department of Education recently announced the release of $3 million in grant funding to help high school teachers obtain qualifications to teach college courses in high school as part of the College Credit Plus Program. Across Ohio, six lead educational entities will work with more than 100 school districts and 19 colleges and universities.
Kent State Stark - in partnership with Stark County Educational Service Center (and their districts) and Stark Education Partnership - was awarded $447,632 of the $3M.
This grant provides funding for credentialing at least 42 teachers from Greater Stark County.
"The grant funds will allow districts to increase the number of staff members able to teach College Credit Plus courses on-site. By
identifying new departments within
Kent State that offer
pathways for
credentialing,
additional courses
may be taught in our local high schools. This exciting expansion will increase the reach of College Credit Plus and afford even more students the opportunity to experience collegiate coursework,"
said Dan Lowmiller, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the Stark County Educational Service Center.

Walsh University was awarded a $30,000 literacy grant from the Ohio Deans Compact to expand the knowledge of preservice teachers, current K-12 teachers and college instructors in the science of reading. The grant's diverse partnerships, the curriculum adoption of reading science and interest-generating activities - including podcasts, Zooms, seminars, LETRS training (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) and Read-A-Palooza - will be utilized to help all children to read well.

Walsh University explained that
"The science of reading is a reformation of reading literacy in Ohio and nationally. The work is ambitious - but doable. This grant brings the power of partnerships together and provides a regional model for Ohio and beyond."
Partners in the grant include Walsh University, State Support Team 5, State Support Team 9 and Perry Local Schools. The Stark Education Partnership wrote the evaluation plan and will serve as the evaluator. In addition, Dr. Teresa Purses will serve as a member of the Advisory Board.
