Beyond Bricks and Mortar: Distance Learning Grows in Ohio

EnGirl with a Laptoprollment in distance learning courses at Ohio's public colleges and universities grew nearly 26% between the fall of 2008 and the fall of 2009, according to a new report issued by the Ohio Board of Regents last month.

The report, Dramatic Increases in Distance Learning Enrollments Continue at Ohio's Public Colleges and Universities[1], shows that 17% of Ohio undergraduate and graduate students were taking at least one distance learning course by 2009. That equaled 93,653 students. Kent State Regional Campuses, which are grouped together in the report, saw a 50% increase and enrolled 3,135 students in 2009. Stark State College saw a 41% increase and enrolled 2,782 students.

According to the Regents, there are now 436 degrees and certificates available online in the OhioLearns![2] catalog - the state's gateway to distance learning. The largest percentage are associate degrees (36%), followed by certificates (35%), graduate degrees (16%), and bachelor degrees (13%).
