Proud ParentNearly Half of Undergraduates at Ohio Public Colleges and Universities are Now "First Generation" Students

Nearly half of Ohio's undergraduates at the state's public colleges and universities are the first in their families to go to college.

The publication last month of Undergraduate and Graduate Student Diversity for Fall 2010[1] by the Ohio Board of Regents shows that 49% of the 499,030 students enrolled are first generation college students.

As OBR notes in the report, "First-generation college students - those students whose parents did not attend college - are an important subgroup in higher education. A high rate of first-generation enrollment is a sign that Ohioans are taking advantage of college opportunities to increase upward mobility."

This trend holds true for Stark's public institutions. Sixty-six percent are first generation at Stark State College and 54% at Kent State Stark. OBR does not track statistics for private colleges and universities.
