It Never Stops at Caledonia Nordic

This past Saturday was one of those incredible mornings that showcased the full potential of Caledonia as a year-round outdoor hub. The parking lot was packed before 10am, with additional lots opened to accommodate the steady stream of visitors.

Our daily 9am hiking crew—known for heading out right on time, rain or shine—was already deep into the trails. Mountain bikers and trail runners were setting off for adventures on the singletrack, Junior Racer athletes were hard at work on the new paved roller ski trails, and disc golfers were warming up for a perfect round. At the same time, young riders were arriving for Week Two of our Spring Saturday Bike Program, buzzing with energy and excitement.

What was once a quiet Nordic facility in the off-season has transformed into a thriving, multi-sport destination. From high-performance training to casual recreation, Caledonia is now a year-round gathering place for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

We are proud to see our community making the most of everything the club has to offer—thank you for being part of it.

Big Thanks to our Singletrack Volunteers

A huge thank you to the incredible volunteers who have been out working hard to keep our singletrack trails in top shape this spring. From clearing blowdown to raking and leaf-blowing, these efforts make a huge difference for every rider, runner, and hiker who heads out on the trails. Special thanks to Andrew Watkinson and Richard Elson for their ongoing work cutting and removing fallen trees—your dedication is appreciated by all!

We have also taken inspiration from our friends at Pidherny and introduced “Karma Rakes” along the trails. If you see one, grab it and rake a short section. A few minutes of effort helps keep the trails fast, fun, and flowing—for everyone. Good trail karma goes a long way!

If you are interested in joining a singletrack work party, please email gm@caledonianordic.com and we will get a day organized. Many hands make light work—and a better ride for us all!

Terus Trail Expansion

Thank You for Your Feedback!

Thank you to the 192 members who completed our recent Terus Trail Expansion survey—your feedback has been incredibly valuable. We are pleased to share that 95% of respondents support the expansion, and 80% are in favour of allowing dogs on at least some of the trails. This strong support has helped guide our next steps.

Work is now underway to address member feedback, including minor trail realignments to ensure the most efficient grooming and to enhance overall skier enjoyment. We are also designing the trails to run through deciduous-leading forest zones, which are better at capturing and holding snow. This will help us extend the ski season and adapt to changing climate conditions.

We appreciate your continued input as we move forward—this project is truly being shaped by our community. Stay tuned for more updates as we bring the Terus Trail Expansion to life!

If you have additional feedback, please feel free to email gm@caledonianoridc.com

Garbage and Bears

Let’s Keep Otway Clean and Safe

If you pack it in, please pack it out—or make use of the new bear-proof garbage containers now installed around Otway! A huge thank you to BC Parks for donating these wildlife-safe bins to help us protect our trails and local wildlife.

You will find the containers in key locations, including the Dog Lot, Biathlon Range, Main Parking Area, and Gravel Pit Shelter. These bins are there to help, but we still kindly ask that you pack out what you pack in whenever possible. A clean trail system keeps everyone safe, including our local bear population.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Otway clean, respectful, and wild-smart!

New Trail Management Stanchions

Safety First!

You may have noticed new trail management stanchions installed at key singletrack access points. These are part of our efforts to improve safety and trail coordination, especially with the growing use of our paved roller ski trails.

The stanchions will be used to temporarily close specific singletrack trails during high-risk times—primarily to minimize the chance of collisions between cyclists and roller skiers during training or competition. There will always be a way down, but you may need to adjust your route.

Regular roller ski training sessions take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00–8:00 PM, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM. Please plan your rides accordingly, and respect any trail closures in place.

Thank you for helping us keep Otway safe and enjoyable for all users!
