Partnering with Scouts BSA & Girls Scouts

AOEA is proud to partner with Scouts BSA and Girl Scouts. Year-round, troops help AOEA steward the 226-acre property and gain valuable skills during their time at the Lab.

Girl Scout Troop 4467 is a long-time partner in our twice-yearly Open Houses. Without their help, we wouldn’t be able to welcome as many families as we do during these special events. Cassidy Greenwalt, a member of Troop 4467, shared that her "favorite part of the Outdoor Lab Open Houses is all the activities I could participate in. I really enjoy fishing, boating, making s'mores, and I get to do that all at the Outdoor Lab. Another reason I love the Outdoor Lab Open Houses is because it's such a welcoming environment, and whenever I'm there it just feels like a nice breath of fresh air (literally)."

Scouts BSA Troop 350 is a new partner at the Outdoor Lab. We are deeply grateful for their repair and maintenance support, especially keeping our trails accessible and camping area in good order. Over the years, the Outdoor Lab has also been the site for several Eagle Scout and Gold Award projects from Arlington Scouts.

"Girl Scouts and the Outdoor Lab go very well together because they share the same message of getting out into nature and experiencing something you might not have experienced before. Girl Scout's motto is "leave it better than you found it," and by going to the Outdoor Lab and learning about the world around us, you really start to understand why we need to leave the world better than we found it." - Cassidy Greenwalt

Meet our Student Board Member

Elizabeth Adams, Washington-Liberty Senior

Elizabeth joined the AOEA board in the fall of 2023. Her fresh perspective as an APS student and Outdoor Lab participant are invaluable.

In addition to her field trip experiences through APS, Elizabeth has been very involved with the Outdoor Lab Summer Camp as both a camper and a counselor. We asked her to share some of her experiences.

What's your favorite place at the Outdoor Lab?

The meadow! I have so many wonderful memories there, from picnicking on the first day of camp to chasing after the Wild Turkey during the Wednesday night scavenger hunt to stargazing.

What's your favorite field trip experience?

My favorite experience from my field trips to the Lab has to be either the night hike or breakfast in the mornings. The night hike gave me a new perspective - to this day, there's a little voice in the back of my head that reminds me "it takes 24 minutes to develop your night vision!". And who doesn't love the Lab tradition of donuts in the mornings?

Has the time you've spent at the Outdoor Lab influenced your future plans?

Spending time at the Lab has made me much more aware of how we interact with the environment. While I'm not yet sure what I plan to do in the future, I definitely embrace being outside and appreciate nature much more because of my time at the Lab. For instance, I'm always looking for hikes and outdoor activities, or talking to my friends about environmental issues. I hope to use the skills I have learned at the Lab in my life as well. For instance, I would love to lead outdoor trips through college clubs and organizations, something I wouldn't have the skills or desire to do without the Lab.

What's your favorite time of year at the Lab?

I love going to the Lab during the summer. Everything is just so alive, especially when it's time for camp. I love the excitement that extends throughout the entire week at camp, and I love how the summer allows you to experience everything the Lab has to offer, from picking wild wineberries to boating to the slip n' slide. However, I may be biased in saying that I think the Lab is beautiful and fun year round.

Your Generosity Makes a Difference

Thank you! With your help, we are proud to

  • conserve wildlife and habitat, including the removal of invasive species.
  • protect clean water sources.
  • maintain the Animal Lab building that houses turtles, snakes, and other animals so students have interactive experiences, no matter the weather.
