Last night, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers addressed Wisconsinites with a plea to do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19, noting the economic and health crisis are interconnected. He noted the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation's projection that 2,500 additional Wisconsinites could die before the new year if no further actions are taken. Additionally, he announced his plans to introduce new COVID-19 response legislation and Executive Order 94, a series of recommendations for Wisconsinites to protect their family, friends and neighbors.
Here at MadREP, we're embracing remote work and virtual meetings where possible and staggering shifts to limit exposure at work. We encourage you to review the new recommendations, as well as WEDC's workplace guidelines, and make sure you're doing your part to slow the spread of this deadly disease. Bending the curve is vital to our economic recovery.
Please remember to breathe and take care of yourselves. Practice social distancing. Wear a mask.

Data Spotlight: A different kind of global recovery: The global financial crisis vs. COVID-19

Sector Highlight: Advanced Manufacturing

For our businesses, citizens, communities and Region to stay competitive and globally connected, broadband infrastructure must be built out to future standards throughout the Region. 4G technologies is the base minimum for the entire Region as broadband is critical to IoT, smart cities, and data center investments and planning. 5G technologies should be the standard for the more technology dense metropolitan areas (such as the cities of Madison, Beloit, Whitewater and Janesville) where financial return on investment (ROI) may exist
for providers. All the use cases for 5G are in development and not currently well commercialized. These include connected factories, autonomous vehicles, smart city platforms and virtual reality. However, 5G will help usher in the Internet of Things era which will result in the commodification of information and data intelligence.

Madison Region Economic Development Spotlight: Riding Opportunity
|
Paul Scharfman saw a troubling trend. The owner and president of Specialty Cheese Company was not only having an issue filling open positions at the rural Dodge County business, but workers were often late or absent, and the employee retention rate was lower than he preferred.
Scharfman found that one of the main causes of the problem was a lack of transportation options, so he became a force behind the launch of a ridesharing program called Getting-to-Work, in which Specialty Cheese Company served as the pilot.
“I truly believe that necessity is the mother of invention,” says Scharfman, who founded the company in 1991 and relocated its headquarters and production facility to the rural community of Reeseville in 2003. “To me, it was obvious that many people in our community wanted to work but were essentially trapped at home because they either didn’t have a vehicle or couldn’t access public transportation.”
With support from the Madison Region Economic Partnership, Scharfman organized the Getting-to-Work coalition in January 2017. The coalition included employers, nonprofits, government agencies and economic development partners in the region. The coalition secured a $100,000 grant from Easter Seals,
a nonprofit primarily serving individuals with disabilities, veterans, the elderly and their families.
