It Takes a Village to Keep the Village Safe

The Kailua Village Business Improvement District's mission is creating a model sustainable community that is a better place to invest, work, live and play.

Safety is one of our primary focus areas and we have an expanded security presence throughout the Village. You may have noticed KVBID Safety Ambassadors (security) in their bright orange shirts both on foot and on bikes and in roving vehicular patrols in the Village.

The Safety Ambassadors on a daily basis in the daytime hours walk Alii Drive and Kuakini Highway (Zone 1) and bike through the various streets of the Old Industrial Area (Zone 2).  The Safety Ambassadors patrol both Zones in the evening hours by vehicle.

Private security has no enforcement powers. When the Safety Ambassadors see illegal activity they report it directly to Hawaii County Police Department.

KVBID's Safety Ambassadors are scheduled for 124 hours each week on two shifts from 12 noon to 8 pm and from 6:30 pm to 2:30 am with expanded coverage on Wednesday, Saturday and Sundays. These security services provided by the national firm Block by Block total nearly 6,500 hours at an annual cost in excess of $200,000.

See Something Say Something

Let's all keep Historic Kailua Village free from crime. If you see illegal activity, please notify the Hawaii County Police Department. If it's an emergency, call 911, otherwise use the police non-emergency line at  935-3311  for all other calls.

If someone is creating a nuisance in a public area make the call. If you're concerned about someone's health and safety make the call. Calls for police assistance are the statistical factor used to determine levels of police staffing required in communities. Reporting crimes helps our police department provide adequate staffing. Make the call.

KVBID's mission is not to solve the homeless issue in our community. It takes the leadership and resources of government and cooperation from many providers and the community at large. We will do our part.

We continue to work cooperatively to improve and maintain the physical appearance and aesthetics of public right of ways, open space and parks, increase cleanliness and security, and attract long term sustainable business and community activity in the Kailua Village Business Improvement District.
