It Is Time To Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace

This year's World Mental Health Day's focus "It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace". The campaign emphasizes that healthy and safe working environments - free from stigma, discrimination, harassment and poor working conditions - can act as a protective factor for mental health. The public are invited to engage with the theme, participating in prompted activities involving writing and art. Share your voice!

In 2022, the U.S. Surgeon General published a Framework, identifying Five Essentials (depicted in the graphic above) for Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being and their respective human needs and components.

Results from the 2023 Work in America Survey from the American Psychological Association indicate that psychological well-being is a top priority for workers. While most individuals expressed satisfaction with mental health and wellbeing support provided by their employers, the survey also revealed significant workplace stress. This includes feelings of emotional exhaustion, irritability and anger with coworkers and customers, as well as a desire to leave their jobs.

Feeling as though your work-life balance is elusive?

Many workplaces offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which is typically available at no cost, to help staff with personal and professional issues, including, but not limited to, grief, mental health, substance use and domestic violence. They can also help employees who are feeling overwhelmed with the demands of work and family life. EAPs connect employees with qualified professionals, and work with them to improve their quality of life. Contact your employer to learn more.
