“I’m not just thanking you for the greenhouses.

You give us more than we can see. You’re giving us respect, when no one else has. We’re forgotten by the world.” Jeremías García Coy

Dear Fern,

Sowing Opportunities' team traveled to the Eastern Highlands of Guatemala on March 15, 2023.

Seeing the faces of the people last week was very moving. They are clearly hurting and also grateful for the ability to sustain their families through agriculture.

We are grateful to you for your continued support.

Though the people are really destitute, they are incredibly strong and resilient. It was an honor to witness the fruits of their labor.

In February, we had two campaigns - one to purchase land for a Gathering Space for Safety and Learning - and one for cookware and oil for the people of Salaguna.

Regarding the land purchase, thanks to generous donations, we raised $5,000 of the $13,000 needed.

We met with Habitat for Humanity Guatemala on March 20 and are now working together to seek grant funding.

Since Sowing Opportunities is providing resources in multiple villages (planning to add one or two more in 2024), we are now seeking land that can be a place of refuge and learning for more than one community, in a central location.

All of this will take time, so it will probably be in 2025 when we’re able to make the purchase and build.

It’s longer than we had expected, but this will allow for greater strategy, working as a partner with Habitat and the village leadership as we find the most appropriate land and raise the necessary funds.

The good news is that, thanks to the generosity of a recent donor, we have a matching funds offer of $1,000, so the land purchase campaign is ongoing!

It was an honor to visit Asociación Maya de Desarrollo weaving cooperative in Sololá, Guatemala with Eliza Strode of A Thread of Hope Guatemalan Fair Trade. I was introduced to the women, saw them at work, learned about the processes and received handicrafts to sell at our upcoming fairs in Massachusetts.

If you can’t make it to our fairs, you can also benefit both the

artisans and Sowing Opportunities’ projects through your purchase online at A Thread of Hope Guatemalan Fair Trade with the code Sowing.

Details of our travel can be found at this link.
