RESET CHALLENGE
STAYING CONNECTED!
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THIS JOURNEY WITH US!

We have spent the past 10 weeks together, and I must admit, I will miss connecting with you by emails. Through this RESET journey, I have learned a lot about you, my team, our YMCA assocation and myself.

Good health is not something we work for and then check off the "to-do" list. Rather, it is something that we constantly tweek, making changes based upon many factors: family, work, stress, environment, weather, illness, injury, opportunity and so forth.

It is my hope that you have learned some new skills and developed new habits that have improved your quality of life.

Please, continue to use our resources, virtual and in-person. As Y members, you have access to programs, one-on-one appointments, the Wellness Center, pool, indoor tracks and more. You also have access to Y staff who aim to help you continue your quest for better health.

Finally, you can contact me any time with questions, concerns, suggestions or to share your success story.

It's not goodbye. The Y is always here for you!

STAY ACTIVE!
TWISTING
Yoga twists have many benefits:
  • Creating length and range of motion through the torso muscles and the spine
  • Releasing tension in the lower back and side hips
  • Compressing internal organs (such as the liver) to release toxins
  • Providing fresh blood flow to the digestive system, improving digestion
  • De-stress by releasing the tension of anxiety-holding muscles: chest, back and shoulders

Note that all of the postures demonstrated below are at a high pace and using the left side. For your actual practice, slow the movements, hold the twist for 3-5 breaths, release and repeat on the other side. Always begin your poses on the right side.
Table Top Twist
Begin in table top, hands under the shoulders and knees under the hips.

Keep the left hand on the ground and revolve through the low back to twist and look to the ceiling.

Lift the right arm and reach to the ceiling and hold.

Replace hand to ground and repeat on the other side.
Modified Lunge Twist
Stand tall on the knees and step the right food forward into a lunge; front knee in line with the ankle, back foot untucked.

Bring the hands to the center of the chest and pause for a few breaths.

Twist through the low back by taking the left arm toward (or on the outside of) the right thigh. Pause and breathe.

Option: Open the arms to increase the stretch, pressing the left arm against the right leg. Look up to the right hand and breathe.
Crescent Lunge Twist
From Downward Facing Dog or from standing, step the right foot forward and come to the toes of the left leg; heel very high, back leg straight.

Bring the hands to the center of the chest for a few breaths and then twist toward the right.

Place left arm outside the right thigh and breath deeply, maintaining the straight back leg. Avoid collapsing the chest to the leg; stay long through the spine.

Option: open the arms, taking left fingers to the floor and right hand and gaze to the ceiling,
Chair Twist
Stand tall with feet together, toes touching, heels separated 1-2".

Squeeze the thighs together, bend the knees and push the hips toward the back of the room (as if sitting on a chair).

Begin with arms straight, high and in front of your head (as if placing something on a shelf).

Bring hands together at the chest and breath before twisting to the right; left arm outside the right thigh.

Option: open the arms, left fingers to the floor, right hand and gaze to the ceiling.

Caution: twist only through the low back and not through the shoulders.
Seated Spine Twist
Sitting on the floor, bend the right leg against the floow and place the foot close to the butt.

Bend the left leg, foot on the floor and knee toward the ceiling.

Twist through the low back and turn toward the raised knee.

Wrap both arms around the knee and look over the right shoulder; or take the outside of the left arm over the knee as pictured.

Caution: keep shoulders down and away from the ears and do not force the twist.
Recline Spine Twist
Lay on the back; bring knees together and pause to allow the back to release.

Drop both knees to the right, open the arms wide and look to the left and breathe.

Allow the legs to be heavy and rest in this pose for 5-10 long breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Option: straighten the upper leg to get a bigger stretch across the back and hip.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens

In life, like wellness, there are times for all things. Just like there are times for weeping and times for laughing, there are days for hard workouts and days for taking it easy.
