Right now, Arizona’s schools are headed toward devastating cuts and the possibility of shutting down because of the state legislature's inaction on changing the Aggregate Expenditure Limit, which is forcing schools to plan without funding certainty.
But all of that could change tomorrow when the House Education Committee hears HCR2001, which, if passed, would authorize school districts to spend local revenues in the amount of more than $1.3 billion in excess of the expenditure limit.
This is not new money. Addressing the AEL is just allowing districts to spend what legislators already voted for them to spend last year.
Devaluing and deprioritizing education will have long-term repercussions for Arizona, with cascading effects.
It is time to do the right thing for our schools.
The legislature must ensure our schools have budget certainty. They must support our teachers and help our students. They must build a foundation for a strong economy by approving a waiver to the AEL for this year and then by developing a permanent solution to this archaic expenditure limit.
Join us in encouraging the House Education Committee to pass HCR2001 by sending an email to the committee members, sharing your viewpoint through the Request to Speak system and/or calling the committee members!
