"A season is set for everything,
A time for every experience under heaven"
Ecclesiastes 2:1.
Greetings!
Every four years, Americans participate in one of the sacred rites of our civic life: the election and inauguration of a president. Ever since George Washington's first inauguration, that rite has been observed in peace and war, in good times and bad, in prosperity and depression and in the face of terrorists at home and threats from abroad. This year, that sacred rite has been tested, rattled and shaken, but ultimately it stood. Yesterday, Joe Biden became the nation's 46th president, the latest link in the great experiment of American democracy that stretches back 232 years.
Every Shabbat and holiday in America, Jews pray in synagogue for the welfare of the United States and its leaders. That is only appropriate, for America has been good to the Jews and the Jews have been good to America. This past year has been challenging. It has been a year in which the pandemic gripped us and wreaked havoc with our lives, our health, our livelihoods and our politics. As Americans and Jews, we cannot and dare not give in to despondency and despair. A Jew is not a Jew without hope. Across centuries and continents, we Jews have faced perils and persecution and yet, we have survived and thrived, married, raised children, lived productive and meaningful lives and enriched the societies in which we were always such a small but dynamic part. The late, great Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (whose death last year was yet another blow) wrote that "hope is one of the very greatest Jewish contributions to Western civilization" and that Judaism itself is "the voice of hope in the conversation of humankind."
Let us continue to be that voice of hope and let us continue to work together to make the future better than the past for our ourselves, our families, our communities, our nation and, indeed, for all of humankind.
