In the past year, we’ve hit the streets with community members to collect real-time data about heat islands in Yonkers for the first time in our City’s history. This is part of a national effort to understand where people are most at risk during extreme heat waves. We built a state of the art playground and new community garden in the reopened Smith, O’Hara Levine Park with the City of Yonkers as part of the Yonkers Greenway. When completed, the Greenway will link Yonkers to New York City with a 2 mile path for walking, biking, and recreation. Our Green Team youth program provided first time jobs for Yonkers youth to empower the next generation of environmental leaders. We grew the Saw Mill River Coalition as a watershed alliance, promoting municipal and community partnerships to restore an important tributary of the Hudson River watershed. Finally, the Science Barge, our fully sustainable off the grid environmental education center on the Hudson River, was a destination for over 10,000 local residents to learn about environmenta
l
sustainability.
