Last week, students at Laguna Beach High School took part in a hands-on learning experience through a simulated Mass Casualty Incident (MCI). The event, hosted at LBHS, was a collaborative effort involving the Laguna Beach Fire Department, EMTs, and Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway instructors.
The simulation began with a staged explosion of a golf cart on the field. Theater students acted as victims, while CTE students responded as emergency personnel. Using the knowledge and training they had gained throughout the year, students assessed the victims, triaged them with color-coded tags, and provided initial treatment—all while adapting to changes in real time. With professional firefighters and EMTs by their side, students explained the decisions they were making during the triage process, including why they assigned specific colors and how those choices affected outcomes. This interactive process allowed for critical thinking and practical application under pressure. For CTE students, this was a crucial opportunity to apply their skills in a realistic scenario that mirrored the challenges they may face in the field.
