Laguna Beach USD excels across key goal areas in annual end-of-year report

At the Board of Education meeting on Monday evening, the superintendent and school principals presented the end-of-year report, highlighting LBUSD's progress in academic, social-emotional, college, and career readiness, and sustainability, communications, and engagement goals. The presentation showcased significant achievements, including improved student performance, enhanced social-emotional support, and advances in sustainability efforts.

Some key data-driven highlights from the end-of-year report that showcase the district's progress include:

  • Academic Progress: High school math saw a ten percentage point increase in students in Tier 1 (within to above grade level) from fall to spring, reflecting the impact of strategic interventions like targeted tutorials and in-class support. Elementary students in Tier 1 increased from 51% to 85% in reading and from 34% to 79% in math. Interventions include specialized teaching strategies, extra help sessions, personalized tutoring, and resources to help students meet academic goals and overcome challenges. These are tailored to each student's needs to ensure they succeed.
  • Social-Emotional Support: Middle school staff increased PBIS systemic practices from 70% to 90%, resulting in a 63% reduction in behavioral referrals. PBIS systemic practices are school-wide methods to promote good behavior and create a positive learning environment. They include setting clear rules, teaching expected behaviors, rewarding students for following them and providing support for those who need help with their behavior. These practices aim to improve school culture and climate, making the environment safer and more supportive for all students.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Progress towards carbon neutrality by 2030, including energy efficiency projects, waste reduction efforts, and integration of environmental education into the curriculum.
  • Communications & Engagement: A focus on improving communication between parents, families, and schools has yielded positive results, according to the annual LCAP survey. Satisfaction with district communication increased from 66% to 88%, while school communication satisfaction rose from 77% to 88%. This strategic focus aims to strengthen active collaboration and communication between parents, families, and schools to support and enhance student learning and development, a partnership integral to student educational success, emphasizing classroom-to-home connections in the upcoming 2024-25 school year.

The report highlighted the district's commitment to a well-rounded education that fosters academic achievement, social-emotional well-being, environmental awareness, and ongoing collaboration with families.
