LBUSD honors students, staff, and community for excellence in school culture, arts, athletics and special programs at Board recognition ceremony

The Laguna Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) Board of Education honored hundreds of students, staff, and community members at its recognition event on Thursday evening. Held twice a year, in January and June, the student and staff awards night brings the school community together to recognize student participants in arts and athletic programs and academic excellence. The event also acknowledges employees of the year and staff members nominated by their peers for contributions to school culture and educational programs. Additionally, community partners and members supporting school programs and activities were recognized.

Laguna Beach High School's Ava Knepper named Sunset Conference Female Athlete of the Year

Ava Knepper, a senior at Laguna Beach High School, was honored on June 3 at the Orange County Athletic Directors' Association (OCADA) Athlete of the Year dinner, held at Servite High School, where she was named the Sunset Conference Female Athlete of the Year. Knepper's high school career in both water polo and swimming includes numerous accolades, such as first-team All-Sunset League, co-MVP of the Sunset League, first-team All-County, and first-team All-CIF Open Division honors in her senior year. Her impressive athletic stats include 101 goals, 37 assists, and 39 exclusions drawn in her senior year, with career totals of 337 goals and 243 assists in water polo, as well as holding LBHS records in the 200 medley relay, 50 free, and 100 free in swimming. Knepper has earned a scholarship to USC, where she will continue her water polo career.

LBUSD students showcase emergency response and theatrical skills in a mock disaster drill at Guyer Stadium

Laguna Beach High School students demonstrated their skills in a simulated mass casualty incident (MCI) simulation at the school’s Guyer Stadium. During the exercise, students enrolled in the Career Technical Education (CTE) Pathways for Emergency Response and Theatre collaborated to reenact a scenario involving a power transformer explosion at the stadium. 


Theatre students applied their makeup and costuming skills to authentically portray victims with varied injuries while showcasing their ability to simulate medical conditions that evolved based on the emergency treatment they received. On the other hand, Emergency Response students engaged in search and rescue operations, victim triage, and emergency medical treatment. Their performance was evaluated by the Laguna Beach Police and Fire Departments, which assessed the appropriateness of the treatment given to the simulated injuries.

Laguna Beach USD makes "Honor Roll" as one of California's top-performing school districts

The Laguna Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) has been recognized as one of California's top performers by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP). This year, only 109 districts, approximately 14 percent of all eligible in the state, achieved this distinction based on student outcomes from the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) spanning 2019 to 2023.  The recognition highlights LBUSD's success in closing achievement gaps, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Top of the World and El Morro elementary schools, were also individually recognized, placing them among the top 17% of schools in the state.
