Principal report: El Morro Elementary School prioritizes student strengths and voice this academic year | |
Dr. Julie Hatchel, El Morro Elementary School Principal, shared with the board a report on the school's areas of focus this year, highlighting strategies the school team has implemented to increase student and parent engagement. She shared that students in the school are now taking the Thrively assessment, a tool that helps to identify students' strengths and areas of interest. The school staff uses the findings to personalize learning and make daily activities more relevant to students. The presentation also highlighted new student leadership opportunities that were created to cater to the diverse needs of students and offer them a variety of leadership roles on campus, such as the Sea Lion Squad and Student Senate. | |
LBUSD's LEAD Program returning summer 2024, offers opportunities for students to explore interests and build new skills |
The LEAD summer program offers LBUSD students a chance to explore new interests and passions, providing opportunities for learning, enrichment, advancement, and discovery. These courses are free of charge for all current and continuing LBUSD students, covering a wide range of subjects, including academics, social-emotional well-being, physical fitness, the arts, technology, and other high-interest areas.
At its regularly scheduled meeting on October 26, the Board reached a consensus to continue the program for 2024 and offer it to families free of cost.
| LBUSD achieves top English language arts score in OC, sets stage for continual improvement with proven strategies | The California Department of Education recently released test scores that report the percentage of students meeting state math, English language arts, and science standards statewide as measured by the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). In the LBUSD, 79 percent of students scored proficient or above in English language arts, 69 percent met or exceeded standards in mathematics and 66 percent of students demonstrated proficiency in science standards. LBUSD takes pride in consistently achieving the highest ELA and math scores in Orange County. | Laguna Beach High School named to Advanced Placement® School Honor Roll | The College Board announced that Laguna Beach High School has been named to the Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning a Gold distinction. LBHS also earned an AP Access Award for providing all students with the opportunity to participate in AP, including students of underrepresented populations. LBHS had 68 percent of seniors who took at least one AP exam during high school, 60 percent of seniors scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam, and 24 percent of seniors who took five or more AP exams. Overall, 39 percent of all LBHS students took at least one AP exam during the 2022-23 school year. | Laguna Beach High School theatre presents “Holes” by Louis Sachar | Laguna Beach High School (LBHS) theatre students return to the Artists’ Theatre on October 27 (through Nov. 5) with “Holes” a part adventure, part western that tells the story of the unlucky Stanley Yelnats and his family curse. Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake, a correctional boot camp in a desert in Texas after being falsely accused of theft. The plot explores the history of the area and how the actions of several characters in the past have affected Stanley's life in the present, as well as the friendships he makes along the way. This show is family friendly and has a great message about friendship, destiny, and family! | |
Board approves ongoing partnership with Green Schools National Network for sustainability transformation | On Thursday (Oct. 26) evening, the board took action to approve a contract with Green Schools National Network (GSNN) to continue a partnership with LBUSD focused on planning and implementing best practices for healthy, equitable and sustainable schools. This includes support for environmental literacy curriculum development and the expansion of school Green Teams. | College and Career Advantage partnership offers career pathways for LBUSD students | LBUSD's long-term partnership with College and Career Advantage (CCA) offers a wide range of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, available to students across Laguna Beach and Capistrano School Districts. These courses encompass on and off-campus options, spanning CTE pathways in Design, Visual and Media Arts, Performing Arts, Patient Care, and Emergency Response. The board approved a Memorandum of Understanding to provide these courses for the 2023-24 school year at Thursday's meeting. | Donations needed for Thurston Middle School Sports Swap | The Thurston Middle School PTA will host its annual Sports Swap on Saturday, November 4 and is seeking donations of sports items in working and resellable condition.
