THE NEWLY OPENED TRAIL (GREEN LINE)
This Saturday, September 26—which is National Public Lands Day—Zylstra Lake Preserve officially opens for daytime public access. The open portion of the preserve features a trail that goes about half-way around the upper lake. The rest of the circumference trail will open in April, after the migratory waterfowl season has ended.
Read more, and watch a guided tour of the new trail.

THE SUN AND ATLAS DO A DEMO
Last year we celebrated the autumn equinox with a sunset hike up Turtleback Mountain, where members and friends enjoyed hot apple cider and ginger snaps. This year, unfortunately, we had to skip the hike—but we made a little video that asks (and attempts to answer) the question: What is the equinox, anyway?

THIS VIDEO SINGS OUR SONG
What's an "anthem"? One dictionary defines it as "a rousing or uplifting song identified with a particular group, body, or cause." We asked our two summer interns, Georgia Drost and Emma Jacobs, to create the video equivalent of an anthem for the Preservation Trust—an uplifting message that connects people with our mission and values.

ROB ROY WITH VOLUNTEERS AT PEACH PRESERVE, GUEMES ISLAND
In our conservation work, we are continually weighing the need to preserve natural values and protect habitat against the need to connect people with land by adding trails, signs, and other accommodations. Striking this balance is a never-ending quest.
Case in point: SJPT Land Steward Rob Roy McGregor, who manages our Peach Preserve on Guemes Island, received feedback from Guemes community members regarding volunteer projects that caused changes to the preserve, including widening a trail and installing trail signs, a split-rail fence, and a bench. ...

CLEAR SEPTEMBER SKY, SAN JUAN ISLAND | MICHAEL NOONAN
Photographer Michael Noonan writes: "This was the night sky on the first day that the awful smoke cleared, and what a joy it was. The Milky Way, the Orion Constellation, Venus, and the lights of Seattle, all in the same view. I just had to photograph it!" (ISO4000, 14mm, f2.8, 20sec exposure)
