After a week of installation work of The Best of the Best Annual Juried Exhibition, A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery is ready for the 63rd Season Grand Opening Celebration Sunday, October 8, with free admission for all. The show will run through November 10. Executive Director J. Marshall Adams said a members-only reception is scheduled for October 7, free for Museum members, $20 for "not-yet members."
| Then it's time for the popular Halloween benefit extravaganza, the Backus Boo Ball, "inspired by the artist A.E. “Bean” Backus’s legendary Halloween parties, Adams said. "In those days, younger friends of Backus were allowed to produce and host highly-anticipated gatherings every year that terrified and enchanted hundreds of guests." | |
|
This year, Boo Ball will be on the Museum's Outdoor Mural Plaza October 21, 6-10 p.m. Tickets are $50 each and are available online at www.BackusMuseum.org, or at the Museum at 500 North Indian River Drive in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce during regular hours.
Guests can enter the costume contest in one of seven categories: Scariest (“Ultimate Nightmare”), Prettiest (“Wicked Beauty”), Funniest (“Scared Silly”), Most Original (“Unique Freak”), Best Couple (“Gruesome Twosome”), Best Classic Halloween (“Chiller Thriller”), and the People’s Choice Award. Live music will be provided by The Square Ones, and there's complimentary monster chow and a cash bar.
Tickets are limited. Check online at www.BackusMuseum.org/boo-ball or call the Museum at 772-465-0630.

Meet Lucy Rhoades - Million Dollar Quartet at Riverside Theatre
Lucy Rhoades is Dyanne, the only woman on stage with the Million Dollar Quartet, opening at Riverside Theatre October 24.
The New York City-based actress managed to steal time from rehearsals for an Arts Blast Q&A:
| |
Family: Mom (Marcie), Dad (Jimmy), Brother (Frank)
Are any family members involved in any form of the arts? My dad (Jimmy Rhoades) is a comedian and TV personality! He’s the reason I do what I do. He is the funniest and most theatrical person I know — he and my mom named me after Lucille Ball!
Do you have other arts interests (painting, writing, etc.)? I’ve been a dancer since I was 2 years old. And in my free time, I love to read!
What was the first musical you were exposed to? How old were you and what caught your attention? The Wizard of Oz. Judy Garland’s singing inspires me to this day. The whole movie is just so GRAND! And silly and scary and beautiful. I was 6 years old!
What made you decide to pursue an education and career in musical theatre?
I was bad at sports and math.
| |
Then, what was your introduction to performing in musical theatre? My dance studio was putting on a musical, so I decided to give it a try, and I never stopped!
Do you have a special memory of a performance to share? Something funny, thought-provoking? Between us, (and this isn’t terribly specific), I am known among cast-mates as a “crier.” Sometimes I’ll take a step back in the rehearsal room, or the dressing room, or backstage, and just think about how lucky we are to be making art and sharing it with communities. IT SOUNDS MADE-UP — but I really do cry out of gratitude at work. It’s getting to be incredibly embarrassing, as well as damaging to the tough-as-nails demeanor I’m trying to adopt.
How much of your time is spent on the road for regional performances? Almost all of it — I closed a show in New Hampshire a week before arriving here in Vero. I’ve been living out of two suitcases for years now. I certainly don’t take my time at home in nyc for granted! But as an actor who often works regionally, I am so grateful to get to explore and really get to know parts of the country that I otherwise may have never experienced! My favorite thing to do when I get to a new city is scope out the local coffee scene. I am hereby accepting any Vero Beach recommendations!

Talk about Million Dollar Quartet: Million Dollar Quartet is based on the true story of the impromptu jam session in December of 1956, featuring Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. The session took place at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, owned by Sam Phillips. All of our actors on the stage are actually playing their instruments live. Every day in the rehearsal studio feels like a real jam session!
That night and those singers and their music were well before your time. Why do you think they continue to pull in audiences almost 70 years later? As our brilliant director Greg Santos says — Million Dollar Quartet is the story of a family and its inner-workings. It is a timeless sentiment, a deep and heartfelt story, paired with the music that helps make up the sound of America. Before my time… yes. But I still grew up on these songs!
Tell me about your character, Dyanne. Dyanne is the only woman in the entire show. She is dating the heartthrob of the world, Elvis Presley. She is holding her own in a room full of legends (and legends in the making). Dyanne is exactly the kind of woman I look up to: she is cool, confident, intentional, coy, smart — and man, does she keep up with these boys! Dyanne is based on a real woman who was actually present on that legendary night at Sun Studio back in 1956. It wasn’t until after the musical Million Dollar Quartet was already running on Broadway that the true identity of Dyanne was discovered — her real name was Marilyn Evans! Marilyn tends to be cut out of the famous photo of the four men crowded around the piano… but lest we forget, there was a fantastically talented woman in the room where it happened!
| |
What music is on your personal playlist for working out and for a relaxing evening at home? My most listened-to playlist is all jazz. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra (my brother, Frank is named after Sinatra), Julie London. Jazz standards are the soundtrack of my life! But I am also known to blast Destiny’s Child and Britney Spears.
I understand this is your first visit to Vero Beach and Riverside Theatre. How do you like our neighborhood? I love it here, and I never want to leave. You’re going to have to drag me away kicking and screaming once Million Dollar Quartet closes! The entire resident team at Riverside has a dang good thing going here. The thought and care for all employees, including actors, as well as the stunning facilities, and especially the care and attention to community outreach — it’s just incredible.
What’s next for you after MDQ? I’m heading back to nyc to catch the tail end of autumn! I’m slated to perform in a few upcoming concerts at 54 Below that I’m very excited about. To keep up with me and my future projects, follow me @lucyrhoades on all platforms, or check out my website www.lucyrhoades.com.
"Here’s to all the women who belong in legendary spaces!"

Catching up with Andrew Kato
Producing Artistic Director/Chief Executive Andrew Kato at Maltz Jupiter Theatre has a busy schedule as the new season begins.
His Master Class series offers a class for each of the shows coming to the theatre. "Our Master Classes illuminate the complex and fascinating process of mounting original productions and covers subjects from casting to design."
Prior knowledge of the show and any theatrical experience are not required, Kato said. "In the spirit of Ted Talks, this class is created to deepen audiences understanding of the shows we’re producing."
And there's room for everyone. "Most classes can handle hundreds of visitors. Only two are restricted to 100 people (but there are two sessions that day). All classes are free, however, we are accepting donations in support of our Goldner Conservatory."
| |
|
Rehearsals are on for the first show, Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, a fantastic thrill ride mystery, Kato said. Running October 29 - November 12, the show will engage theatre goers "in the intricate narrative, unraveling the clues surrounding a murder that occurs within the confines of a luxury locomotive. The audience will work alongside the detective to piece together motives ...."
Murder on the Orient Express is a theatrical adaptation by Ken Ludwig of Christie’s iconic novel.
The story is centered around detective Hercule Poirot, played by Andrew Sellon (A Funny Things Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Foreigner, 39 Steps) as he embarks on a journey filled with intrigue and suspense. When a shocking murder occurs on the train, Poirot finds himself amidst a diverse cast of characters, each with their own secrets. Poirot must navigate a labyrinth of clues, alibis, and hidden agendas to uncover the truth behind the crime.
| One of the standout features of this production is the set design itself, according to Kato. Designed by Paul Tate DePoo III and originally built by the Asolo Repertory Theatre, the set is assembled like a puzzle with central pieces moving together on the stage and rotating to reveal different compartments of the train. This ensures that the audience witnesses the story not only from many distinct viewpoints but also experiences the suspenseful moments between each train car. Kato said, “The production values, including the set, costumes, and projections, will take us on an extraordinary journey adding a dynamic layer of intrigue to the narrative and will bring the audience along on a sensory journey they will not soon forget.” | |
Christmas at Maltz Jupiter Theatre will have a joyous look for the holidays this year with the addition of A Christmas Carol.
"I’m extremely excited about celebrating the holidays with our new production of A Christmas Carol which incorporates imaginative staging, flying, magic, special effects and a chorus of traditional songs."

NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE WEEK
October 8-14, 2023 - The Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, the nation’s first Refuge, established in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt, will be celebrating the National Wildlife Refuge Week with extra volunteers onsite to provide information and answer questions. In addition, they will be available to assist those needing transport to reach some of the viewing areas along the trails. You may wish to check their Facebook page for possible updates and information, at www.facebook.com/PelicanIslandNWR.
Saturday, October 14, 3:30 to 5:30pm. Join us for a memorable cruise with some delectable treats, while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Indian River Lagoon and wildlife. We will arrive at Pelican Island as some of the birds begin to return for their evening roost. The cruise takes place on the Environmental Learning Center’s pontoon boat and we will be accompanied by one of their naturalists.
This cruise departs and returns to Jones Pier on Jungle Trail in Indian River Shores. The ELC is currently operating their cruises from the Jones Pier Conservation Area while their pier is being renovated. Thus we are unable to schedule a later cruise to catch the sunset. Jones Pier is located at 7770 Jungle Trail. The quickest route to Jones Pier is via Old Winter Beach Road from A1A in Indian River Shores/Vero Beach. Proceed westbound to the end of the road. Continue as it bears to the right and becomes Jungle Trail; Jones Pier is a short distance to the north.
Reservations are required at $70 per person and can be made by clicking the “Reserve Your Seat” button above.
There is public parking at Jones Pier and restrooms. Please arrive early to check in and use the restrooms, (there are no restrooms onboard), as the cruise departs promptly at 3:30pm. Please note that refunds will be provided only if the trip cancels due to weather, at the discretion of the ELC captain. There are NO refunds if you miss the boat! You do not need to check in at the ELC - please arrive at Jones Pier!
