Six years ago under the backdrop of the Interstate 80 Des Plaines River bridges in Joliet, Gov. JB Pritzker, IDOT and local leaders announced the launch of the Rebuild Illinois capital program. The twin spans, more than 60 years old, would be replaced as part of a larger $1.3 billion reconstruction of the I-80 Will County corridor — a key cornerstone of Rebuild Illinois.
The governor, IDOT and local leaders returned May 15 with the news that the bridges are now being replaced. The $164 million project began in early May and is expected to be completed in 2028, with the old bridges demolished in 2029.
“The start of construction on these bridges represents not just another huge milestone for I-80, but more jobs, improved safety and enhanced quality of life for the region and the state,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi. “A project of this magnitude would not have been possible without Gov. Pritzker’s leadership and vision. We are proud to start on this last piece and look forward to delivering a modern, safer, reliable I-80.”
