The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) proudly announces the successful completion of its 2025 STEM Summer Institute, a five-week program designed to inspire, challenge, and equip the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This year’s institute brought together 31 scholars from across Arkansas and several out-of-state locations.

| | UAPB Observes National POW/MIA Recognition Day | | |
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) observed National POW/MIA Recognition Day on September 19, 2025.
The day is observed annually on the third Friday of September to honor prisoners of war and those still missing in action. The day calls on Americans to remember the sacrifices of military service members and their families and encourages flying the POW/MIA flag in recognition of this commitment.
In recognition, Missing Man tables have been set up and are on display in Childress Hall and the L.A. Davis Dining Hall on the campus of UAPB. They can both be viewed until the end of the month.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Student-Athlete Academic will host a Financial Literacy Workshop presented by FBT Bank with UAPB Alumna Latasha Randle, Vice President and Director of Community Outreach. This event will take place on Thursday, September 25, 2025 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The location is the 1890 Building Auditorium located on the campus of UAPB.
“This engaging and informative session is designed to empower our students with essential financial knowledge to support their personal and professional success. While this workshop is part of our student-athlete development programming, all UAPB students are welcomed and encouraged to attend,” says Aliyah Hill, Student-Athlete Development Coordinator/Academic Counselor at UAPB.
“We ask that you help spread the word and encourage student participation across your respective areas. Your support is vital in helping us foster well-rounded student experiences both in competition and in life,” Hill said.

National Association of HBCU Title III Administrators

The 2025–2026 academic year has begun, and the National Association of HBCU Title III Administrators is accepting student applications for 2025. We look forward to one of the year’s most rewarding activities: awarding annual scholarships to undergraduate students at HBCUs who submit competitive applications. The Scholarship Committee anticipates awarding between $500 and $1,000 per recipient.
It is our preference to award at least one scholarship in each of the eight regions. Last year, we awarded well over twenty scholarships and expect to award perhaps twice that number this year.
Applicants are encouraged to work closely with their campus Title III Administrator. The Scholarship Committee asks that Title III Administrators review each scholarship packet and certify that it is complete.
Important: The deadline to submit scholarship applications is Friday, October 3, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CST. Applications must be submitted via Microsoft Forms. Links to the application and instructions are below:

Mari'Neisha Hardrick, a senior multimedia communications major at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, recently spent the day shadowing journalists at THV11.
“Her thoughtful questions and ‘can-do’ spirit made it clear she’s on the path to accomplish incredible things in her career,” said Ebony Harding Kendrick, Managing Editor at THV 11. “We can’t wait to see where her journey takes her—and we hope she comes back to visit us soon! At THV11, we’re proud to support and encourage the next generation of storytellers.”

Congratulations to Shahid Evans, who graduated from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) this past May 2025, and will be joining KNOE-TV as a multimedia journalist. Evans received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from UAPB in Multimedia Production, specializing in Broadcast News.
KNOE-TV is a local television station in Monroe, Louisiana, serving Northeast Louisiana and parts of Arkansas and Mississippi with news and programming from CBS, ABC, and the CW networks. Known as KNOE 8 News, the station provides local news, weather, and information, and also offers content via digital platforms like its website, KNOE.com, and mobile apps.

UAPB Partners with Cornell University on
Digital Agriculture Initiative

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is collaborating with Cornell University to expand research, outreach and workforce development opportunities in digital agriculture, according to Dr. Shahidul Islam, professor and director of the Regulatory Science Center at UAPB.
The project is led by Dr. Islam and co-principal investigator Dr. Adedeji Adetunji, assistant professor for UAPB’s Department of Agriculture. At Cornell, the partnership is based in the Cornell Agricultural Systems Testbed and Demonstration Site (CAST), a Farm of the Future initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

| | UAPB and UALR Partner to Launch First Gen-Cyber Camp for Local Students | | |
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), in partnership with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), hosted its first Gen-Cyber Camp, introducing 21 students to the growing field of cybersecurity.
The weeklong camp gave participants hands-on experience in identifying cyber risks, protecting personal information, and understanding the importance of cybersecurity in everyday life. Students explored topics such as online safety, digital ethics, and real-world cyber threats, all while developing skills that will serve them in school, college, and future careers.

Over 50 individuals from across Arkansas recently had the opportunity to meet, network and learn ways to make their forestry operations more profitable and sustainable at the fourth annual Champion Landowner Retreat held at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute in Morrilton, Arkansas. The three-day event was hosted by the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s (UAPB) Keeping it in the Family (KIITF) Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Program and the Arkansas Department of Agriculture (ADA).

September is National Whole Grains Month, an opportunity to celebrate the health, cultural and economic benefits of whole grains, according to Dr. W. Jinnings Burruss Jr., assistant professor of food service and restaurant management at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
“Whole grains are more than just a dietary choice – they are an important part of community wellness, especially in Arkansas and the Delta region,” he said. “In areas like the Arkansas Delta, where heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity are serious health challenges, whole grains can play a life-changing role. They lower cholesterol, improve blood glucose regulation and promote healthy weight management.”
