Hi Zach,

It’s hard to believe the time has finally come. You’re ready and here is where you belong. From all of us in the Office of Residence Life and Housing, welcome to The Forest!

We are so excited to welcome you to your new home, this Wednesday, August 23. As you prepare for this next chapter, we wanted to offer some last-minute reminders and instructions for move-in.

STEP 1:

CHECK-IN

Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum

(LJVM aka the Joel)

STEP 2:

PARK AND UNLOAD

At your new community, unload your belongings and relocate any vehicle (s).

STEP 3:

MOVE-IN

Set up your space and begin settling into your new home!

CHECK-IN

  • Check-in at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum (LJVM aka the Joel) at 2825 University Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27105, no earlier than 15 minutes prior to your move-in time. You can view your suggested move-in time, based on your first-year community here. Check-in will be available from 8 a.m to 2 p.m EST. If you will be arriving after 2 p.m., please submit this late arrival form.
  • Students and families should park in the Pepsi Parking Lot.
  • Students will go in the coliseum’s front entrance and follow the signs to check in so you can get your room key, DeaconOne Card (student ID), mailbox key, parking pass (if you purchased one), a parking pass for move-in, and a personal recycling tote.
  • Shuttles will be available from LJVM to campus.
  • Once you have checked in at LJVM, write your cell phone # on the move-in parking pass, circle your building name, and place the pass in clear view in the front of your vehicle’s dashboard; you will then drive to campus. You can drive onto campus through any campus entrance but we encourage students and families to enter via University Parkway or Reynolda Road.

PARK AND UNLOAD

  • Traffic and police officers will be posted to help direct you to your residence hall. Please be patient, as there will be traffic and some wait times likely.
  • When you drive up curbside to your residence hall, you’ll be guided as to where to park (either by a traffic/police officer or Wake staff with a gold or black name tag).
  • You should go unlock your room, and you or your family may begin unloading your belongings curbside.
  • Someone must stay with your vehicle at all times, as you will only be allowed to park curbside as your car is unloaded.
  • Pro tip: put a sticker with your name, residence hall name, and room number on each box/piece of luggage, just in case any boxes or luggage are accidentally moved to a different room.
  • When all belongings are unloaded, volunteers will help carry your things to your room, and you will be instructed to drive to one of our parking lots and walk back to your residence hall (see diagram for parking lots and walking paths to the residence halls; click to enlarge).
  • As a reminder, move-in assistance will be available from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.
  • We know that pets are a part of the family too, but please note that pets are not allowed in the residence halls. Service animals or approved emotional support animals for a student are allowed. We encourage you not to bring pets to campus during move-in.

MOVE-IN

  • Move into your room and begin settling into your new home.
  • When you check-in, you’ll receive a link to your Room Condition Report (RCR). You’ll need to inspect your room within 72 hours to make sure there aren't any discrepancies between your RCR and the actual condition of your room. If you find any discrepancies, you can note them in your RCR and also notify your Resident Adviser (RA) so you won’t be held accountable for any potential pre-existing damages.
  • As space is limited in each room, you may need to give your roommate and their family some space as they unpack. Similarly, you may want to ask your family for some space to spend some time settling in with your roommate.
  • As you’re configuring your new space, please be mindful that our beds are not lofted, but can be raised approximately 36 inches off the ground.
  • Please note that all furniture included in your room must remain in your room. Furniture cannot be replaced/ removed from the space.
  • It may be helpful to bring some basic tools with you (rubber mallet, hammer, screwdriver, etc.), as you and your family assemble new items for your room!
  • Please break down any boxes and place them in the cardboard-only section. Only trash should be placed in the nearby dumpsters.
  • As you’re moving in, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to our community staff. We’ll be in the community to welcome you home and answer any questions you may have!

For detailed instructions on the move-in day process, please be sure to check out our Move-In Hub!
