The InSider
Goals are Dreams with a Deadline

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced "The Right Talent, Right Now" as the theme for the 2019 National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

The 2019 theme emphasizes the essential role that people with disabilities play in America's economic success, especially in an era when historically low unemployment and global competition are creating a high demand for skilled talent. The Department's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) administers NDEAM.

"Every day, individuals with disabilities add significant value and talent to our workforce and economy," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. "Individuals with disabilities offer employers diverse perspectives on how to tackle challenges and achieve success. Individuals with disabilities have the right talent, right now."

Observed annually in October, NDEAM celebrates America's workers with disabilities both past and present, and emphasizes the importance of inclusive policies and practices to ensure that all Americans who want to work can work, and have access to services and supports to enable them to do so. With continued advances in such supports, including accessible technology, it is easier than ever before for America's employers to hire people with disabilities in high-demand jobs.

I'd love to hear about your journey or to hear any feedback on what we are doing and what we can do a better job of, just send your comments along by clicking the link below.

Who is Spinal Network?
We are! The Southern California Chapter of the United Spinal Association has changed its name to Spinal Network, not only is it fits on a pen.

Here is how the new name fits with what we do and who we are:
Spinal - as in spinal cord injury, spinal diagnosis, spinal disease, spinal disorder
Network - community, support, resources, services, opportunities

When we discussed this at our latest board meeting, we all just looked at each other nodding our heads, it just fit perfectly. We are excited to begin the branding process and to spread the word. We hope you like our new name and see the significance, it is after all, your name as well as ours.

Challenges during the teen years
There are many physical, mental, emotional, and social changes are associated with the adolescent and teen years. It is important that during these years, the teen become as independent as possible so they can reach their full potential.

Becoming Independent
Becoming independent means fully taking over the management of your care. This should include bowel and bladder care, moving independently, making doctor’s appointments, having and participating in a physical activity program, engaging in activities with friends, and more.

Tim and Cerrah Talk About The 2nd Interabled Couple Get Together
We are Timothy & Cerrah Vondersaar and we've organized a peer support group for Interabled Couples in San Diego.

There are so many untold, beautiful love stories of couples in which one person has a disability and the other person does not. It comes with unique challenges, but with the right support we can happily roll and walk through life together.

We want to build a place where interabled couples feel safe and comfortable enough to share their challenges, experiences, resources and thoughts with others in similar relationships.

Our outing last week was a great success. We met at a casual restaurant that had great access and great food, we talked about life in general and then on to a few more specific items, one being topics to discuss at a future gathering.

We will be scheduling our next informal meeting soon. If you have a question or would like more information, please reach out,  happilyinterabled
