A Prayer for Democracy on Election Day

by Teri McDowell Ott

Published in The Presbyterian Outlook

God of justice, mercy and peace,

.

We come before you in this election season, grateful for the precious and fragile gift of democracy. We know that democracy is not guaranteed. It must be practiced and protected by every generation.

.

We give thanks for the extraordinary promise of an ordinary ballot. For a democracy in which the vote of a poor widow carries the same weight as that of a tech billionaire. Where power belongs to all the people, not just the wealthy or privileged. Where every voice matters, every person has dignity and every vote deserves to be counted. God, protect this promise.

.

We pray for the poll workers who serve long hours to make our elections possible. May they be treated with gratitude and respect, protected from threats and harassment, and supported in their work.

.

We pray for polling places free from intimidation, interference and fear. Clear the path for every eligible voter to cast their ballot safely and without obstruction.

.

We pray for the voters standing in long lines, for parents holding fidgety babies, for workers watching the clock on break, for older adults and people with disabilities navigating barriers, for those traveling long distances simply to exercise their right to vote. Give them patience, persistence and the assurance that their participation matters. May no one be turned away unjustly or discouraged by needless burdens.

.

God, protect the integrity of this election. Give election officials wisdom, courage and the resources they need to administer an election that is free, fair, transparent and trustworthy. May unfounded accusations give way to verified facts, and may legitimate concerns be addressed with honesty and accountability.

.

We pray for candidates and political leaders. May they speak truthfully, disagree without dehumanizing and treat their opponents with dignity. May they remember that public office is a responsibility entrusted to them, not a prize to be seized. Give them the humility to accept the will of the voters and the integrity to honor lawful election results.

.

God, remind us of the principles that sustain a just democracy: that government derives its authority from the consent of the governed; that no person, not even the most powerful, stands above the law; that freedoms of speech, conscience, religion and assembly belong to all; that the will of the majority must never erase the rights of the minority; and that free and fair elections allow the people to hold their leaders accountable. When these principles are threatened, God, give us courage to defend them.

.

God of hope, you call us to seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with you. May our participation in this election reflect that calling. And may our democracy, imperfect and fragile as it is, become a more faithful expression of the equal dignity and worth of every human being.

.

Amen.

10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Join a group from Donegal Presbytery to explore Lancaster's newest museum!

Named after 19th-century abolitionists Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith, the Stevens & Smith Center showcases the courageous struggle for freedom and equality in America – both across the nation and right here in Pennsylvania.

We'll meet at 10:00 AM inside the front entrance of the Stevens & Smith Center for introductions and a quick orientation. Then you'll have time to explore the museum's 16 exhibition galleries at your own pace. Afterward, we'll step across the street to the Southern Market food hall, for lunch and guided conversation.

November Presbytery Gathering

Featuring Choice of Workshops

.

Tuesday, November 17, 2026

9:30 am - 3:00 pm

First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville

We're excited to gather as a presbytery at First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville later this month!

.
Our worship will include celebration of the Lord's Supper, the annual Witness to the Resurrection honoring Ruling and Teaching Elders who have joined the Church Triumphant, and preaching by outgoing Presbytery Moderator Rev. Bob Bronkema.

.

During our Learning Community time, choose from five exciting workshops:

.

THOU DOST PROTEST TOO LITTLE

  • Rev. Doug Hagler

The church has a long history of leading and participating in protest movements that have changed the world for the better. But during a time in the US when there are many active protest movements, the church is often hardly present, if at all. We will explore the differences between a vigil, a demonstration, and a protest, and we'll discern where our congregations can participate and provide leadership today.

.

ROOF-BREAKERS A DISABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY CRASH COURSE

  • Rev. Matthew Stone

This workshop will explore how disability and accessibility affect congregational life and worship, with some concrete workshopping of issues affecting congregations. Participants will deepen their understanding of God’s call to access, and the tools and processes to improve access for all church members and guests.

.

FRESH IDEAS FOR FAITH FORMATION

  • Sara Pantazes

Does family engagement feel like a moving target in your congregation? Or maybe you are looking for ideas that would bring some new energy to your family ministry? This workshop will provide an overview of six program ideas that fall outside the boundaries of usual Sunday School and contain opportunities for participants to learn and grow in the areas of service, stewardship, Bible literacy, community, and more. We'll talk about how these ideas can be adapted to work in different-sized congregations and provide time for participants to share innovative ideas from their own churches and brainstorm more together.

.

CURIOUS CONVERSATIONS: WHERE OPINIONS MEET CURIOUSITY AND DECIDE TO STAY TOGETHER

  • Rev. Ann Hatfield

In our polarized world, having healthy dialogue about contentious issues can feel impossible — even within the church. Yet, if we want our churches to be places where people learn and grow together in Christ, we need to tackle talking about sensitive and difficult topics. In this workshop, participants will observe and learn the "Curious Conversations" model for approaching these hard conversations. Based on seeking to understand others’ perspectives — even when we passionately disagree — Curious Conversations are opportunities to practice listening, asking genuine questions, staying in the room with difference, and humanizing our ideological opponents. Our presbytery has several trained facilitators who are ready to host a Curious Conversation at your church, and this workshop offers a chance to see what they are all about.

.

WORLD MISSION ROUNDTABLE

  • Rev. Pamela Leach

As a follow-up to the World Mission Learning Community Time at September’s Presbytery Gathering, this workshop offers the opportunity to continue the conversation. We will look back at previous global partnerships and forward in anticipation of the Spirit’s guidance into new partnerships, for us as a presbytery, in our local congregations, and even as individuals. Bring your questions and ideas!
