Philippines Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) Update

This past Tuesday, another devastating Typhoon made landfall in the Visayas region in the Philippines. This marks the 20th cyclone this year. Nearly 380,000 people have been displaced by Typhoon Tino, while many are still evacuating.

Pictured here is a photo from Ophelia “Pangging” Inot, our active seed saver in Tabogon, Cebu (north) sharing their totally damaged house, but still managed to secure their seed library box!

This is the power of our movement and seed sovereignty in action! Even amidst massive destruction seeds prevail and hold hope!!

We have now heard from all our team members across Cebu and everyone and their immediate families are safe. Cell signal is still intermittent across Cebu Province, but we are relieved to know all our team and families are safe!

It hasn't been a full month since Cebu, Philippines was hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake. These are unprecedented times. Our community in the Philippines is still rebuilding from this recent disaster, while being hit with another climate calamity.

It is not clear when people can return home or when farm reconstruction will start, but here are some ways YOU can stay involved during this time:

  • Stay updated with live updates via our socials Facebook and Instagram;
  • Donate and support the community as they rebuild their farms and find ways to return home;
  • Share information and bring awareness to climate disasters across the Philippines.

We each have a role to play in helping our communities build back together!

Thank you for being an essential part of our movement for seed sovereignty, needed now more than ever!

Misereor Germany Visits our Seed Sanctuary in Cebu

Last week we had a special visit to our Cebu Seed Sanctuary by Marcus Wolter of Misereor Germany.

We are leading a collaborative project with them and Naturland to build an organic seed certification model for the Philippines and we look forward to further collaborations with Misereor Germany.

It was wonderful to have Marcus with us and you can read his reflections from his visit on his LinkedIn Post here.

Multi-Year Project Kick Off with Darademo

Last October 26th, the The Npo法人Daredemo Hero Agricultural Training Project, in partnership with Communities for Alternative Food Ecosystems Initiative (CAFEi) and Global Seed Savers Philippines (GSSP), was officially launched in Brangay Taptap in Cebu City.

This three-year initiative, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to strengthen local farming communities through sustainable and inclusive agricultural training to enhance farmers’ link to markets and increase family income. We were honored by the presence of Japanese General Consul Hideaki Matsuo, JICA NGO Desk Coordinator Osuga Akiko, Japanese Association President Raiko Fujioka, and Cebu City Agriculturist Jeolito Baclayon. Together with our farmer partners, beneficiaries, and local officials of Brangay Taptap. A promising start to a collaboration that grows hope and opportunity for our farmers.

We were thrilled to share seeds at this gathering and are excited to be part of this project with such strong fellow implementing local NGOs!

Every $25 supplies organic seeds to farmers across the Philippines ensuring climate resiliency and protecting biodiversity.
