Everything you Need to Know about Raising Baby Chicks
For those of us welcoming new chicks, how can we give them a solid start? Be prepared before you even pick up your chicks!
To best transition chicks into a flock, provide comfort, care and complete nutrition from day one. A chick never gets over a bad start. The actions we take before and the care we provide in the first few days can set-up our chicks to be successful long-term.
| | | | |
Weeks 2-3
2- to 3-week-old baby chicks grow quickly and change each day. To continue giving them a strong start, keep the brooder clean and warm, offer complete starter-grower feed and fresh water.
| | |
Weeks 4-5
Chicks grow quickly and reach the beginning of adolescence around weeks 4 and 5. You can begin telling the chicken’s gender, adult feathers begin growing in and chicken pecking order begins.
| | |
Weeks 6-8
6-week-old chickens are ready to move from the brooder to the coop if the outdoor temperature is at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Make the transition from the brooder to the coop slowly.

How and When to Apply
Pre-Emergents
Are you wondering how and when to apply pre-emergents? It’s a great question for this time of the year. Applying pre-emergent herbicides is a proactive way to keep your lawn weed-free as spring approaches.
In Texas, aim to apply pre-emergents before February 15th, as soil temperatures around 55°F trigger weed germination. Stop pesky weeds before they sprout!
