Spring is an exciting time in general, but especially when you're focused on a river. The osprey have returned and their nests are built. The rockfish have spawned in the river and are fattening up for their migration back to the bay and Atlantic Ocean. The plants on shore are leafing out and showing off bright new flowers. Everywhere we look, life is surging into the open.
Of course, another thing the springtime is famous for is rain. While much of the past few months have been drought-like, recent rainy days have flushed a lot of stormwater into the river, and our water quality monitoring teams have found a few spots where algal blooms are emerging. Thankfully, as we all get in the spirit of tending our land, this is a perfect time to take direct action on managing stormwater on our own property. Two ideas are installing a rain barrel, or planting thirsty native plants with deep roots that infiltrate rainfall better than grass and also provide forage for birds and pretty flowers for all of us.
So if you've got a landscaping project in mind this spring, feel free to reach out to SRA for help selecting plants that will benefit the river, keep our fish and crabs abundant, and the water clean for those hot summer days that are just around the corner, when we all could use a cool swim.
