Weekly Wrap-up

Last week, video footage was leaked showing federal contractors flying illegal immigrants into New York state during the dead of the night. One of the federal contractors involved with the flight told local law enforcement that, “the government is betraying the American people.” 

I agree—and that’s why I introduced the Stop the Betrayal Act. This legislation is simple: it would prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding the transport of illegal immigrants into our communities—whether that is by plane or by bus.

The video footage made public last week was from August. The truth is, we don’t know exactly how many of these flights there have been since then because the Administration won’t come forward with that information.

The Administration’s policies at the border are failing—there were nearly 2 million illegal immigrant encounters at the border last calendar year. This includes gang and cartel members, individuals on the terrorist watch list, and known sex offenders. I see the border crisis as one of the top safety and security issues facing our communities right now, and based on what I'm hearing as I travel throughout our district, Iowans do too.

The border crisis is a problem that has a solution--we must enforce the Remain in Mexico policy, end catch and release, and give border patrol agents the resources they need to keep us safe. Secretly transporting illegal immigrants into the country should not be an option, and that is why I introduced the Stop the Betrayal Act.

I’ll continue working to hold the Administration accountable for the border crisis and advocate for policies that keep our communities safe.

Holding Communist China Accountable
Communist China continues to steal American data and innovation, rip off our farmers, and manipulate the supply chains for goods on which we depend. They are responsible for allowing the COVID-19 pandemic to spread—destroying lives and livelihoods across the globe. Their list of horrific and globally damaging behavior goes on and on and they need to face real consequences. Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi brought legislation to the floor this week that not only gives Communist China a pass for their behavior, but gives them a boost. The America COMPETES Act is a nearly $325 billion spending bill chock full of Build Back Better provisions that would allow your money to boost China, and I voted no.

Taking on Communist China shouldn't be a partisan issue--it's an American issue--and politicizing it at home plays right into their hand. I'll continue working on solutions that put America first and hold Communist China accountable.
Why are Federal Agencies Still Closed?
My team continues to hear from Iowans who are receiving subpar service from the federal agencies their paychecks fund. From veterans who can't access benefits to folks who aren’t hearing back from the IRS on last year’s tax return—it’s unacceptable. I joined my colleagues in a letter to President Biden calling for accountability and information on why these agencies aren’t fully operational: federal offices should open and staffed in-person.
National Prayer Breakfast
My faith guides me as a mom, wife, and leader—it was an honor to join my colleagues in prayer at the National Prayer Breakfast this week while in Washington. We prayed for unity during these divisive times, for our troops and their families, and for peace and prosperity in our country.
U.S. Coast Guard Meeting
This week, Master Chief Chris Mullins and Lieutenant Kandon J. Burton of the U.S. Coast Guard visited my D.C. office to present us with a U.S. Coast Guard Seal. I'm grateful for all who serve in the Coast Guard -- we will proudly display the seal on behalf of Iowans! 
POLL: Are you watching the 2022 Olympics?
U.S. athletes have trained their whole lives to compete and represent our country on the global stage. They deserve to compete in a country that respects human rights and where they can speak freely without fear of retaliation from a dangerous communist regime. That is why I backed a resolution calling on the International Olympic Committee to rebid the games to a country that respects human rights.

With the games beginning today, I want to know, do you plan to watch them?

My team attended the Learn Over Lunch hosted by the Waverly Rotary Club and Waverly Chamber of Commerce to learn more about how Waverly-Shell Rock High School business teachers are preparing their students for the workforce.

Some students have already launched their own businesses. Thank you to these awesome teachers who are going above and beyond to set their students up for success!
