Library partners with Centre College for Día de Muertos events

As we observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, the library is partnering with Centre College and Professor Laura Chinchilla's Spanish students for a Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration.

Students from Chinchilla's classes will create, present and dedicate ofrendas, following a custom practiced in many Latin American cultures. Ofrendas are presented to commemorate the souls of those who have died, and they often feature humorous and whimsical features.

The ofrendas will be displayed at BCPL from Oct. 10 through Nov. 3, and they will be dedicated Oct. 27. In addition, Chinchilla's students will help our youth services staff lead special Bilingual Storytime programs on Oct. 17 and 24 in which stories will be presented in English and Spanish.
