There's no doubt the arts are feeling the effects of the Coronavirus, with more stories in the news every day. I had grabbed a story for Arts Blast from the Internet about museums in Italy being closed and confinement efforts made in the northern part of the country but even before this issue went out, restrictions had been applied to the entire country.
On the Treasure Coast, the byword seems to be "Stay alert, be prepared." Sophie Wood, spokesperson for Vero Beach Museum of Art shared a letter to members that went out last week:
The Vero Beach Museum of Art takes its role as one of the primary cultural tourist attractions within the county very seriously. Currently, there are limited cases of COVID-19 in Florida. However, we want to reassure our members, patrons, and visitors that we are carefully following developments and have created a task force to deal with the coronavirus in the event of an outbreak in our community. In the interim, the VBMA has implemented best-practice protocols and hygiene procedures to safeguard our staff and visitors. We would encourage you to follow the advice and guidelines communicated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

At Backus Museum & Gallery in Fort Pierce:
This special exhibition by Florida Artists Hall of Fame inductee James Hutchinson features more than 30 oil paintings that present the exquisite variety of scenes from Florida, Hawai’i, Jamaica, and the American West, as well as perceptive Seminole portraits and glimpses of a vanished way of life -- all rendered with deep and genuine insight by a modern master. Through April 26 at Backus Museum, Fort Pierce.

Jesus Christ Superstar
at Vero Beach Theatre Guild
|
From Vero Beach Theatre Guild:
The legendary musical Jesus Christ Superstar will highlight the Easter season when it opens March 11 at the Vero Beach Theatre Guild with performances through March 29. A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen unusually through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
This mesmerizing production, with music and lyrics by Emmy, Grammy, Oscar. and Tony winners Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice began as a rock opera album in 1970 before it was launched on Broadway as a full scale production in 1971. Since then, countless numbers of productions and revivals have been stage around the globe.
|
Jon Putzke, the Guild’s President, is directing this contemporary production and has chosen to set the show at water’s edge on the Sea of Galilee. “Christ’s followers were fishers of men,” Putzke said. Through a collaborated effort with the Guild’s scenic and lighting designer Jeff Hall, a wharf with various docks, piers and pylons on a revolving stage has been created. The biggest challenge was staging the crucifixion scene. “Once we agreed on the idea of setting the show on a wharf, it became readily apparent that the cross would be created utilizing a broken mast from a fishing boat and suspending Brendan Wenger (Jesus Christ), who would appear to be nailed to a dock post with his back to the audience. This way we were able to create the scene so the audience would be viewing the crucifixion from Christ’s perspective” Putzke added.
Joining the team of creators for this mega production is Gregory Harris serving as musical director with choreography by Beth McKenzie-Shestak. Lisa Keeler is stage manager.
|
The cast for the production was assembled with some of the most talented performers along the Treasure Coast from as far north as Melbourne Beach to as far south as Stuart. Brendan Wenger heads the cast in the vocally challenging role of Christ with Collin Salvatore playing the iconic role of Judas Iscariot. Jenni Lawton appears in the coveted role of Mary of Magdala with Alex Martinez as Pontius Pilate. King Herod is played by Mariano Garcia IV with Peter Chunka and Matthew J. Wood as Caiaphas and Annas. Peter, John, James and Simon Zealots are performed by Tim Chastain, Lance Morgan, Andy Morejon and Tevin Brown. Chelsea Wenger appears as Pilate’s wife. Gloria Allen, Eleanor Dixon, Shannon Fallon, Sandi Hellstrom-Leonard and Nikki Marie Przedwiecki play the Followers of Christ and the High Priests include Jeff Edwards, Don Hipsman and Phil Matson.
Tickets can be purchased in person or phoning the box office Mondays through Fridays from 10am to 2pm, 772-562-8300 or online at verobeachtheatreguild.com.Tickets are $30 for adults and students with ID are half price.

On The MTA? The Sloop John B?
One way or another, The Kingston Trio will arrive in Vero Beach March 12 for a rowdy concert of their favorites at the Emerson Center.
Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard may be gone but the legendary sound they created back in the late 1950s lives on. The road to fame for the trio began in 1958 with their single Tom Dooley and continued with more than a few iconic LP successes in the following years, including
Kingston Trio at Large, From the Hungry i, and Here We Go Again — and the hits just kept coming.
LIVE! from Vero Beach has brought The Kingston Trio to Vero Beach several times for sold out performances at the Emerson Center. Tickets are available
online
for the March 12, 7 p.m. concert.

Vero Beach Chamber Orchestra & John Korczynski
|
What began as “a pile of new violins and a crew of curious students interested in figuring them out” has blossomed into the “real deal” twelve years later. That’s the
Vero Beach Chamber Orchestra
, founded by local violinist and teacher Tom Fritz. Tapping Colbert Page Howell for the conductor position and Matt Stott as concertmaster, Fritz had success in his sights.
Musicians of the VBCO are professionals, students, and those in between. There are only two concerts on their bill every season, both free but accepting suggested donations of $10 that contribute to a fund that creates awards to help students heading for college.
|
The first concert in the 2020 season is Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rachmaninoff, featuring piano soloist John Korczynski, and
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4. Korczynski, 36, lives in Indialantic and is director of music ministry at St. Sebastian Catholic Church. This is his first outing with the chamber orchestra. “Last year my friend and 1st violinist in the orchestra, Dr. Peter Conrardy, approached me about soloing with the VBCO. I didn't hesitate to say yes and already had the Rachmaninoff 2nd on my mind as it is among my favorite concerti.”
Along with his wife, Sasha, a professional violinist, Korczynski created a chamber music series at their church. Playing as the Golden Arrow Duo, they’re in the second season of the series. “We love performing together as well as in larger chamber ensembles. I think we'd both agree that if Brahms is on the program that's enough to keep us happy,” Korczynski said.
With six children, the couple “juggles their full-time music careers with fervor,” letting nothing take precedence over family time. “Life is wonderfully chaotic, but we wouldnt change a thing.”
The first concert is March 15, 2 p.m., at Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center. The second, an all-Beethoven concert, is April 26, with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, featuring piano soloist Joana Gonzalez
,
and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

A 250th birthday deserves a full year of celebrating, so Happy Birthday every day, Ludwig !
For purists, the official day is .. Unkown! He was born in 1770 and baptized December 17, so it was decided somewhere along the line to celebrate his birthday on the 16th. Personally, I'm voting for a year-long celebration with cake everyday.
Although Beethoven was known for being deaf, there is a big misconception about his disability. Beethoven was, indeed, deaf, but for the majority of his life he had perfect hearing. In fact, it wasn’t until he was 30 years old that his hearing started to diminish. By that time, he had already composed many piano concerts, six string quartets and had even composed his first symphony. Luckily, the loss of his hearing was a slow process, which allowed Beethoven to continue composing music. Since he had played and listened to music for the first three decades of his life, he was extremely familiar with how he wanted music to sound.
His hearing ability dwindled over the next few years, and unfortunately he lost all of his hearing by the age of 44. However, his intuition was strong, and he had a strong memory. He was still able to recognize and imagine how music should sound! Beethoven’s earlier works were composed using a full range of frequencies, but in his later works, lower notes were used. This was due to his hearing loss. As his hearing began to fail, he started to use notes that he was able to hear more clearly. He still continued to use higher notes in his compositions, and towards the end of his career he began using them again. It is said that towards the end of his career, he was relying exclusively on his imagination, therefore using higher notes once more.

Hanneke Cassel Trio
For those waiting for Mike Block to come back to Vero Beach for his string camp and International Music Festival, a bit of a treat is in town this weekend. Block will be part of the
Hanneke Cassel Trio
concert March 16 at First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach. This stop in the tour is a free benefit concert for the string camp scholarship fund, with donations gratefully accepted.
Cassel and Block met in a fiddle camp in 2007 and are now married with an 11-month old daughter, Eilidh. Being parents doesn’t slow the family down. “We have a great nanny who goes on the road with us,” Cassel said. Eilidh isn’t into the fiddle yet but she does have a penny whistle and a shaker she likes to play with. Like little Eilidh, Cassel grew up surrounded by music. “My mom is a retired music teacher and plays piano and violin.” Like mother, like daughter, and soon like granddaughter. Cassel plays fiddle and piano and said she “loves playing either one in a jam! Usually fiddle is easier to pull out. :)”
|
Now a Somerville, Mass. resident, Cassel grew up in Oregon and is a Berklee College of Music graduate. She hopes that her future will include continuing to make music and “someday to have Eilidh as a student at the camp!!!”
The Hanneke Cassel Trio Tour begins with a private concert in Miami March 13, then moves to Sarasota and Gainesville before hitting Vero Beach. Then it’s on to Palm Beach Gardens for one final concert. They’ll all be back in July for the string camp and music festival. Read more about Cassel on her
