Recent News & Announcements
June is Cataract Awareness Month

Cataract is the world's leading cause of blindness, accounting for approximately 42% of all cases of blindness around the world. A cataract is when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. Its similar to looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Things look hazy, blurry, and less colorful.

If left untreated, cataracts can lead to vision loss and even blindness. Visit your eye doctor regularly as early detection is critical for preserving sight.
You can reduce your risk of developing cataracts! Here are some helpful tips:

  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Quit smoking
  • Eat foods rich in antioxidants

June is also Alzheimer's Awareness Month

According to the Alzheimer's Association, 6.5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. This number is expected to rise to 13 million by 2050. While there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, the earlier the diagnosis, the more effective the treatment will be. If you've noticed changes in yourself or a family member related to memory loss, thinking, or behavior, consult a medical professional for a full evaluation. Click here for more resources.

Health and Nutrition
5 Benefits of Quinoa

Native to South America, quinoa (pronounced keen waa) has been a staple crop in the Inca culture for centuries. In the past decade, it has gained popularity for its numerous health benefits.

  1. Rich in fiber - 1 cup = 5 grams of fiber
  2. Gluten-free - but rich in nutrients like zinc, magnesium, fiber, and folate which many gluten-free diets lack.
  3. High in protein - 1 cup cooked = 8 grams of protein
  4. Helps with blood sugar regulation
  5. Helps reduce triglyceride levels

This seed is easy to incorporate into your diet. Try adding on top of salads, use as a rice alternative, or include it in a breakfast bowl. For more nutrition tips, reach out to our team of Registered Dietitians at TPMG Nutrition Services - (757) 232-8768.
